Kasey's 60g

Sorry to hear about the leds...they are tricky when it comes to sps. Sps do not like to adapt to them without a very long acclimation period..
Anyways there is nothing like t5 or mh to make them happy and colorful.
Good luck going forward

:( Really bummed to hear things went south on you Kasey. Matt is right about the new lighting, things will turn around for the better in short time mate

2015 will be a good year for your reef Kasey :)

Love this homemade....

Next time will steal your idea....

Sorry to hear about the troubles. LED's are tough to dial in, when they look bright to our eyes they are way way too bright for the corals. Once I figured this out I switched to T5's. The ATI fixtures with their quality reflectors and active cooling can put 200+ PAR down all the way to my sandbed. Pretty good considering I run with dirty glass lids. :)

I've never used Halide but I know own one fixture and a 14K Phoenix bulb. Beautiful color IMO and I will soon be running it over my little 29 gallon tank.

Thanks Biggles, I certainly hope so! This ride has been up and down, lots of tough lessons. Thanks again for the encouragement. :)

Thank you, I'm glad you like it. Feel free to steal it all you want. :D

Yeah, the brightness to your eyes makes it super difficult. I also feel like there's a very small intensity sweet spot for LED's. I kept mine on the dim side and tried ramping super slowly, but in the end, I don't think the corals were receiving enough light. The clam was the signal to switch back to MH. It didn't show signs of being shocked by light. It just looked normal, until it decided it couldn't go any more, poor thing. The corals all browned out over time as well. Twice I've been tempted by the vixen, that is LED lighting. No more. :)

Thanks Richard. It really helps having you guys cheering me on. I love challenges and I hate quitting, but this string of bad ideas and luck has really tempted me to stop. Can't say enough how much I appreciate the kind words.

Thanks Richard. I need to comb back through your tank thread, but are you dropping PO4 through GFO? I ask cause most bacteria dosing I've done strips the nitrates down before the PO4, giving pale colors and poor health (at least they look unhealthy). Bacteria dosing is generally my go-to method, at least in the past. How do you keep PO4 down while keeping nitrates up, personally? My guess is feed heavy, skim hard.

I'm gonna read through your thread again.

I haven't had to use GFO in months and my po4 stays around .00 - .03 according to the hanna low range colorimeter. Nitrates are currently 25ppm. I keep it this way with prodibio bioptim/biodigest, special blend, and 2 water changes per month. With a BB system if you're skimming heavily, you may find it difficult to get your nitrate up.
FWIW I don't see any problems using a SMALL amount of rows if your po4 gets up near to .1 or higher. I have never had a negative experience with GFO in this situation. I only ran into GFO problems when I didn't actually need it.

Thanks for the info! I'm planning on starting Prodibio, as I've got 6 months worth of stuff just sitting. I do want to add sand. I think I'll just use Prodibio, water changes, and skimming hard. I'm hoping that the fish will to die enough food if I feed them multiple times in the day.

Kasey, I wouldn't use the bioptim unless you have at least 5-10 nitrates. If they're near 0 you will strip the tank and your corals will suffer. I did this in the past, and so did a lot of my buddies :)

Thanks for the tip, Richard. Unfortunately, I'm betting my nitrates are up, due to some losses. I'll test everything to make sure. Thanks again!

I'm getting back up though. I'm hoping I can nurture these back to the point that they're colorful, growing, and thriving. Time will tell.

You have nothing to worry about! You can bring this tank around in no time. You know what you are doing, you know what you have to do.
No better time than the present! :)
The minute you see one little thing start to look better, you will get hooked again. It's like a good book or a workout. You're not sure you want to get started but once you do, you're happy you did.

Kasey,
Hang in there, maybe put some chaeto in the sump on a reverse light cycle, adjust skim to wet, and use a filter sock with daily changes, and maybe some larger than normal water changes. I personally have learned my lesson from over-reacting to these type of issues and busting out my wallet for a band aid cure. I am sure you will be on top of this in no time at all, keep up the fight, and don't panic on the test results, they are only tests... Best to you bro, hopefully you will bounce back in no time at all!!!
Regards,
