Thanks, Rich - we're back already! We stayed at the hyatt as well - what an amazing hotel, eh?! Dove with Aquatic adventures + Bubbles below - both highly recommended!

Just came back from the North Shore of Kauai.

Here are my reviews of the following beaches. We aren't certified so we snorkeled.

Hideaways - Just East of the Princeville Resort

Lots of wildlife and pretty corals. The farther I went out towards were the waves were breaking, the nicer it got. Overall, my favorite place.

The trail down to the beach is hazardous and steep. On our last day there, a guy got bit by an eel at the base of his index and middle finger. The bite went all the way down to the bone. He said he was looking for shells. I think he got his hand to close to the hole where the eel was. Fortunately, after lots of stitches, he's going to be OK.

One day we floated around the Eastern point to the other part of the beach. For us, it wasn't really worth it.

Ke'e - End of the Road

Second favorite beach. We wasted a lot of time exploring the inner side of the reef. Later, I went across the mouth of the opening on the left side and saw all sorts of critters. It was neat to see a blenny up close.

Later, we learned that the best snorkeling and all the turtles are on the outer edge of the reef. It was great; but, the water across the top of the reef was really shallow and we got nicked and scraped. At higher tide, you should be fine.

On the outer side we were rewarded with turtles. At one point, we were less than a foot from one and the wave action kind of put us even closer. I was so close to his face I thought he might want to bite me to defend himself. Fortunately, we were able to back away from each other.

Tunnels Beach - East of Ha'ena Beach Park

Lots of groups were diving. It's a bit of a walk from the main parking lot. If you can snag a spot on the 2 side roads recommended in The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook Kauai Revealed you'll have a short walk to where the best snorkeling is.

It's a nice place to snorkel. Even though a snorkeler can't go in, you can see the scuba divers going in the caves and you can see some of them from holes in their roofs.

Nu'alolo Kai Reef - On the Na Pali Coast

We took a Zodiac ride down from Anini Beach and stopped to snorkel and eat at the only reef on the Na Pali coast.

It was nice; but, no better than other places to snorkel. We did see a few turtles. The boat ride was lots of fun and going into the caves was neat.

Anini Beach - Near Princeville Airport

They say that this is the calmest best beach on the North Shore because the offshore reef protects it. The waves were almost nonexistent. We didn't snorkel here.

Hanalei Black Pot County Park - Southside of Hanalei River Mouth

Great vibe and picnic place next to the boat dock. People park their cars right on the beach. Lots of people were picnicking and having a great time. At the mouth of the Hanalei River, you can watch the kayakers.

Wai'oli Beach Park - Southside of Hanalei Bay

Great beach to play in the sand and jump into the water. We didn't snorkel there. Nice to watch boats anchored in the bay. Gentle waves when we were there.

Queen's Bath - Northside of Princeville

Great place. You swim in a large pool that is refreshed from the ocean. People jump off the rocks into the water.

It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to hike down and over from where you park.

On our visit a girl stepped on a cousin of a Tuxedo Urchin on the side of her beach shoes. About 12 spines went in her foot. It looked like she had acupuncture. Another 40 spines were in her shoe. We gave her some first aide and helped walk her out.

She'll be OK and I'm happy to report so is the urchin. In her hour of need, no one could muster up the urge to urinate on her foot. Fortunately, we had some Neosporin with Pain Relief. It seemed to help.

Shipwreck Beach Keoneloa Bay - Grand Hyatt Kauai - Po'ipu

While the Hotel is beautiful, the beach is rough and not that pretty. Even though hundreds of people were staying at the hotel, only a few people were in the ocean. For such a nice hotel, we were really disappointed at the beach they selected. The water was too rough to snorkel.

The best part was seeing people jump off the cliff on the East Side into the ocean. The Hotel staff said it was very dangerous and one of their employees was seriously injured the week before.

Po'ipu Beach Park - Po'ipu

This beach was attached to a pretty park on the East side and the Marriott on the West. There is a breakwater to protect the children and tombolo that lost it's sand that now forms a little island offshore that people go out to and stand on.

While we were there a monk seal cub was sleeping on the beach and it's mother would come out of the ocean to check on it. Since they are endangered, the area around the seal was roped off. It was neat to see the seal and we liked the beach. It seemed to be the nicest one in the Po'ipu area. We didn't snorkel there.

Spouting Horn - Po'ipu

This was a blow hole that you can watch. It moans and shoots the water up. It was impressive.

---

Overall, we had a great time and are looking forward to going back. The North Shore of Kauai is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Everyone should get a chance to see it at least once.

Best of luck,

Roy
