Kaylee's 75g upgrade build thread

I bought 2 megaflow kits for my tank. It was obnoxiously loud. I ended using the adjustable pipe and remaking the top into a durso. Probably could have been fixed by adjusting the return flow a bit. But the durso top worked to silence it.

I also noticed in the 90 degree pipe on the return there was a little pin hole that was letting air bubbles into the loc-line and filling my tank with bubbles.

Zal that pin hole is to break the siphon if you lose power and the tank drains to the lowest part of the loc line or to the pin hole dont block it

Well that most certainly isnt what I wanted to hear. My wife will not stop complaining if it makes a lot of noise. Hopefully I can figure out a way to make it quiet without modifying it.

You can never have TOO many tanks. always need one for qt. It looks wonderful. I will be over my head, as usual, when it comes to setting up my sump. Hope you are putting the cup holder to good use:lol:

Thanks. I can help you set up your sump when you're ready if you want. Lol on the cupholder

I blocked it, I dont care if it does siphon. I keep them near surface level and pointing across the surface. My sump can hold like 40-50 extra gallons also. I suppose if I pointed the loc lines down more it could potentially siphon, I just couldn't live with the bubbles it made.

The other thing is the drain pipe sits much lower (in my tank at least), as long as the returns openings sit above the vents in the overflow you are fine.

It was the holes on the sides of the pipe that I think made the noise. It always sounded lound and like a gurgling sound - not the flushing from the siphon.
I used the screen that came with the megaflow kit on the durso I made - cost maybe $2 for me to make both and it made it pretty quiet. You can still hear the trickle of water but it isnt bad.

when it comes time for help, I will fill the cup holder:fun4:

Lol

I guess I will have to see what it does once its all set up. Thanks for the heads up.

A lot of the noise i think comes from flow rates. I am running an Iwaki 100 dialed back a bit. But when I first set up the tank I only had 1 powerhead so I didnt want to reduce the flow too much

Looks like bob is getting a new tank in the living room and calling it his daughters lol nice move lol good luck

Lol. Im sure when my daughter grows out of reefing in a few years it will mysteriously morph into a nice little reef tank. I will have to change it over very slowly that way my wife doesnt see the money flying out the window again, lol.

I am gonna have to put a ball valve on the return tube just to be safe then. My daughter has 2 aqueon 950 gph powerheads so maybe I can get away with the return pump died back a bit. Probably get better skimming by that way also.

Yea, my return is dialed back... but only the slightest bit.You would probably have better luck if you dial it down more. If your is still too noisey I can send you pics of how I modified mine.

So I finished the plumbing tonight and am almost ready for the water test (fingers crossed for no leaking). Anyways here are some plumbing shots.

Here is the bottom side of the bulkheads. I had to criss cross the line because of the lack of room and very rigid piping. But I think it came out ok.

Here is a better shot of the criss crossing pipes

So I just added a bunch of live sand that I got from Suicideissleep (thanks again Ron). I threw in some water to see if the bulkheads would leak and.......... So far so good, lol. I mixed up like 30 gallons of water and threw it in the tank with the livesand and a powerhead and heater so that it wouldnt die. Hopefully in a day or so I will put my daughters livestock into a little tub to hold them and add her livesand and rock and a little rock from my tank and see how long it will take until I can add her critters to their new home.

Ok, so I have my daughters tank all up and running now and between the sand that I got from Suicideissleep (Ron) and the few pieces of rock I took from my daughters tank and my tank it is stable enough for a few fish. I checked all parameters before adding a few fish and a day after adding a few fish and so far so good. I bought 2 domino damsels to help cycle the tank and also put my daughters Huma trigger in there because he was being an A-HOLE!!!!! to the foxface rabbitfish that I put in her current 56g tank to help with some algae issue due to the lack of a cuc. I need to get rid of the triggerfish before I transfer the rest of her fish to new tank. Anyways here is a few updated tank shots.

Here is the left side of the sump with the skimmer that I cant seem to get to work (very frustrating)

Here is the right side of the sump. Its a little dirty because the sand did not want to settle at all for like 4 days

Here is kind of a top downish shot of the sump. The rock in here came from my tank.

Here is the left side of the dt with a nice chunk of rock from my daughters tank and 1 of the domino damsels

Here is the right side of the dt with the other nice chunk of rock from my daughters tank with both domino damsels and the aggresive huma trigger

I played with the flow rate a bit and dialed it down about a third of the way and it is nice and quiet now, THANK GOD
