So after browsing zoaid for way too long I have come to the conclusion that there are just so many different color and pattern variations with zoanthids that it almost doesn't make sense ot name them anymore, and also a lot of them seem to be the same but they have different names and people always mix them up anyway. Take AOG's for example. There are like 20 different variations. I think they should make the naming a bit simpler or just have the names be an actual description of the zoanthid. For instance, Greyish brown undertone with bright pinkish red rays coming from the mouth and extending to the skirts zoas. Or you know, it doesn;t have to be that long. Hey we could just use acronyms. So that would be GBUWBPRR zoas. I dunno, it just seems like the whole zoaid naming thing is starting to become way too cumbersome. What do you guys think?

I think names work the way they are except some zoas do look too similar to have different names. It is an easy way for one reefer to know what another reefer is talking about. If I say I have a green protopaly it could be any shade green, but if I say I have a nuclear green, you know exactly what I am talking about.

It is out of control, and I do wish that ZoaID would combined like Zoas. I have seen a few that have different names but are really the same Zoa. Different lighting, camera, location on the reef make them look a little bit off in color, but they are the same.

Way out of control. Names should be updated and certain zoas should be deleted since they are the same except for lighting, etc.... Most of the zoas on zoaid are nice, but some are just plain out right boring and can be found at most LFS.

Thanks for the responses. You know what also gets me is that Zoas will change color drastically under different conditions. So I guess to properly identify one someone should have photos of it under all kinds of conditions, also photos of them while closed because the out part is also an indication of their identity, I think this is often overlooked. This may seem a bit drastic but if you don't have enough barriers for the introduction of a new name then it gets pretty messy.

Actually Zoaid does work to put like morphs together and if you have questions about a specific named morph, email them and the staff/board of Zoaid will take a look at it.

I know of several instances where they have changed names, combined like zoas etc..

Also Zoaid is not just for the "rare" or most beautiful.

Zoaid is an equal opportunity zoa/paly namer. It does not discriminate against nationality, color, polyp size, or creed. :D

Yeah I have e-mailed them before about like zoas, maybe they just get a lot of mail. I also agree that it is for all zoas and should be. not just rare or colorful ones

I can agree that there are morphs over there that should be combined.. They usually have discussions about it on other reef forums, I don't think RC likes you talking about other websites here so they don't let the conversations take place here. If you google "zoanthid forum" you can get involved in the conversations about combining and narrowing down the morphs.
