i have a small 3gal tank, tryin to figure out what to do with it. any way to keep a small jelly in it? i have it connected to a 20gal sump, fluval 405, and its inline for my 55gal, uv filter. so filtration is at a peak. but i wanna do something with this 3gal. any small jellies

Jellyfish are more of a go with the flow type of animal.....and need a special type of tank. It is something like a "kriesel" (spelling?)style tank where the flow enables to keep the jellyfish in suspension without touching the sides or getting sucked into any type of overflow/filtration.

Sorry to say this, but it's probably not the best idea IMO.

There is a great new (?) book I just got from amazon.com called How To Keep Jellyfish In aquariums, by Chad L. Widmer. No color photos, but very good line drawings, complete as can be and in terms that anyone could follow to build an aquarium that would keep jellyfish alive. Includes info on getting, breeding, feeding, and housing the jellies, as well as simple to build plans for any style of jellyfish tank including the "kreisel" style tanks and complete do it yourself instructions. Very good read and good information.

I have kept upside down jellies for short periods of time, we used to collect them and sell them. they are easy, but require reef style lighting because they are photosynthetic.

In the past I've tried to keep portugese man O war, which isn't a true jelly, but looks and acts like one. I was only successful for short period of time and I had a tank with current and strainers that didn't allow the animal to be injured. They still only lived for a short time and I couldn't figure out why so I stopped collecting them, I don't like to kill things without results, if I could have shown some success I would keep trying.

Just curious Philter4 how did you collect a Man-O-War? Also do you have any pics cause that would be impressive to see?

Sorry, back then was before digital camaras or even cell phones so no photos. collecting them is easy, in august they would come close to shore and we could net small ones up. I have been stung, only on the hands which are callused so the sting didn't bother me, but I've never been stung on soft tissue. The main reason I started trying to keep them was for the man o war fish. I could keep them if I had solid sides but once I put the fish in glass tanks they would just keep running into the sides and eventually kill themselves. I thought that if I had a man o war in with them it would calm them down. The only way I was successful with the fish was in plastic tanks where the fish couldn't see out.
