Keeping Anemones alive?

well, there's quite a few things involved in keeping an anemone alive as far as i can tell, here are just a few in no particular order...

1. water quality
2. lighting
3. absense of predators
4. water flow

I know everyone is going to freak out when they read this but here it goes. I want to set up a 10 gal. tank and get a "VERY SMALL ANEMONE" and grow it out. If I had 8 watts per gal., had only a protein skimmer and a couple of power heads, would that make for a good temp. home until the anemone grew up? If not what system would make for a good home using a 10 gal. tank? And remember the anemone I get will be VERY SMALL!

Small anemones would be Aiptasia(Glass Anemone), Anemonia Majano(Majano), S. tapetum(Mini Carpet), "Tulip"(Not sure of species), or possibly Bartholomea(Curly Cue Anemone) would all be candidates for a small, stable, and dedicated environment.

Buying a small specimen of a species growing large has typically been proven risky. Available small specimens of the larger species have been in long term decline and stress, putting them close to death. IMHO: add such a specimen to a small inherently unstable environment would be a bad idea.

One of the aspects TheVillageIdiot mentioned was water quality. Water quality entails not just your nitrate, nitrite, ph, etc actual levels, but also the stability of those parameters. In a 10 gallon tank you're going to have a huge problem with stability.

As a beginner its actually much easier to start out with a larger tank.

If you want anemones, I'd cough up a few more dollars and get a larger tank, and then wait 6 months until your system is stable. If you don't have the means for a larger tank right now then I would just wait on the anemones.

If you're dead set on the 10 gallon tank, I would head over to some of the nano-tank forums and see what they are keeping in them.

Good luck!

BTW: Petco has tanks on sale this week. $1/gallon. Not a bad price and a 40 breeder for $40 makes a great anemone tank. There are also SOME 30 and 37 cubes out there at amazing prices. Good luck.
