Keeping clams in a 30G

I recently asked Bob Fenner at wetwebmedia some questions about stocking, and one response that surprised me was when he told me I shouldn't have a crocea and a maxima in my 30G cube. The reason he gave is that there's too much metabolism for too little volume.

So I cracked open James Fatherree's book on Clams and he says "No clams in Nanos..." but GRRRRR....doesn't define nano.

I've tried clams before without luck, but thought 'this time I'll do better." I'm wondering now if I'm kidding myself. I don't want to kill any more of them... I've had my crocea and maxima in this aquarium for about four months.

I'm strongly considering removing one or both of my clams based upon this. I've seen a lot of people with clams on Nano-reef....but I've also read a lot of stories about clams that didn't make it; even from people that I consider 'experts' on this site.

Has anyone on this forum kept a clam in a nano (30G or less) for over two years? Should I remove one or both of these clams? The 30G is two years old, and my parameters are stable (alk, calcium, temperature, nitrates).

i have kept clams in all my nanos.. just make sure you have enuff light keep your ca-alk right and have some fish in the tank and should be fine

I think it has something to do with:
1) the maximum size of the full grown clam(s); and
2) the difficulty in getting stable water parameters for such a small water volume.

The problem is that once you have a few clams growing they can suck out the calcium and alkalinity like crazy...I can lose 5dkh and about 40-50ppm Calcium a NIGHT. A day or two of not doseing and you can be in trouble. Automated is the way to go.
