Keeping mp40 on glass

I've got a tank with 3/4" glass and I can't seem to keep the dry and wet sides stuck together. For the dry side I use two of the plastic stick on strip with plastic wire tires for the chord. They will keep the heavy dry side help up for about a week before the weight of the dry side pulls the sticky things off the glass causing them to fall. Thank goodness they have not fallen in the sump (yet).
And yes I have cleaned the glass with alcohol and made sure it was dry before I stuck the included sticker things on the glass.

Any other suggestion or is everyone using something different ?
Keep in mind, I've got 3/4" thick glass so the pull between the dry and wet side are not the strongest.

Thanks

Make sure it's set to the 3/4" thickness and don't use the spacer when running on 3/4" glass. That should take care of your issue.

Don't get me wrong, the magnets hold together, it's just not real strong and after a couple of days the weight of the dry side gravity pulls it off the glass. Ecotech supplies the sticky wire tie things to be used on the chord to help with the weight. But those are coming off (unstuck) from the glass to.

Do you have a canopy?
I used a ziptie that comes with a screw hole on the end and screwed it into my canopy. the mp-40's wouldn't stay put on my 3/4" glass either.

No, it's an open top tank. Guess I'll have to make something to hook on the rim of the tank. Good to know it's not just me.

Did you tie it with the zip ties that came with the mp40?

as great as these pumps are, you should always take precaution and tie it with the given material to secure it.

Try running the cord down insted of up, use the cord kinda of like a stand. Ive always done it this way when i had that problem, and imo it looks better this way on an open top tank. Like this...

honestly that looks really good but you should not at least tie it down with the mounting materials ecotech made available to you.

my mp40 dropped when i didn't use the zip wires. i say stay on the er side and zip tie it down. it cost way to much for it to drop on accident.

reefpatrol,

Are the wetsides spinning freely? If not, this could cause the MP40 to decouple and remove the sticky tab from the glass.

Jumping on this thread to ask more questions...

My MP40 wet side pops loose a few days after cleaning. Seems like the movable parts don't move that easily. Should it be lubricated? Just how tight should the nut at the end of the propeller be?

When it works there doesn't seem to be any vibration like out of alignment causes. It's on 1/2" thick acrylic and the spacer has been set to the correct value.

The pump has been in service for about 6 months. The first time it came off it did need to be cleaned. I increased my cleaning schedule and after the second cleaning it started frequently falling off.

wood,

The nut on the MP40 wetside should be hand tight. Also, lubrication should not necessary but you will want to make sure the white ceramic bearing is flush with the surface of the wetframe.

All of the parts are installed correctly, as per the YouTube video. Is the black bearing (the one that goes into the white ceramic bearing) supposed to be able to rotate within that white bearing? Mine doesn't. In fact I can't separate them!

I was just going to ask this same question.
If the propeller doesn't spin freely by gently pushing with your finger, then the extra tension, and the resulting vibration, can cause the two sides to come apart.

OK. After a few frustrating days I think I have the answer!

The two bushings, one white ceramic, the other black nylon or plastic, must be free to rotate - one against the other. Mine had somehow become stuck together. After an over night soak in vinegar they now rotate freely.

Ever since I started having this problem, getting the propeller to turn effortlessly has not been possible. Once the two bushings were unstuck the propeller now turns with no effort!

Does anyone see any problems with putting a VERY SMALL amount of plumbers grease, a silicone based lube that is potable water safe, on the connecting surfaces of these bushings?

I will install the unit later today and see what happens.

From a customer support perspective I'm not all that impressed. Neither of the two support people I've been in contact with suggested the bushings as an issue. Am I the only one to ever have this problem? I even mentioned it (stuck bushings) both here and in email.

In my email conversations the rep suggested I needed a new wet side. This unit has been in service less than a year. A $500 pump needs a $100 'fix' after less than a year! I find that TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. Note that I was not offered a wet side as warranty replacement, it was recommended I PURCHASE it!

I do really like the two MP40 units. When they work, they are fantastic. I think the company needs to do some work on improving the design, user manual and customer support. Including spare parts (both bushings and that little washer) in the box would be nice touch.

Everything spins freely, even tried it with a brand new wet side just to make sure. It seems out of the three I have it's only a problem with one of them. If it matters it is my oldest one. Not sure if why. Just to test everything, I have three mp40s all with good working clean wet sides. Then I bought two new wet sides just for extras. This one particular "dry side" will not stay stuck through the glass no matter what wet side I use. Sometimes it would last a few minutes but that was it. It seems like the magnet is just not as strong as the other two. Have they ever used or changed magnets ?
