Kent Barebones

Hi I am right on the verge of ordering a Kent Barebones 10 GPD RO unit because my phosphates out of the tap are ( according to salifert) .5 ppm. Now, I am wondering if anyone has purchased this unit and if they have anything to say about it?

They are cheap and i see no reason why they shouldn't get the job done unless they are just inferior in quality.

I really need advice because buying things scares me when I;m afraid I am buying the wrong thing.

I am now debating whether the Maxima Ro/Di would be better. I am just really worried about phosphates. Right now my tanks is diatomb heaven. It so ugly. The only problem with the Ro/di is 1. it is way more off the bat ~$178 on Marine Depot and also every six months i would have to change not only a carbon filter but a carbon filter and a sediment filter and there is also the replacement Di cartridges. Our hobby is So expensive but I still love it.

You really need an RO/DI system as just RO is not going to make you happy. The Barebones produces water at a tirkle and you will be lucky to get 3-4 gallons in 24 hours.

Search for RO/DI on ebay. I got my unti ~70 GPD, for around 100 bucks.

TDS of the tapwater was 165, TDS out of the RO/DI was 0.

I just ordered a Kent Marine Maxima 24 GPD RO/DI

I have heard good things about them. I just figured that I might set up an empty 29 gallon SPS/LPS tank and if I did then I would want more than the barebones would give me.

It arrived yesterday and I have set it up today. Its wonderful! My TDS meter also arrived yesterday so I measured the tap water which is around 130 TDS and about an hour after functioning the RO water without the DI cartridge is at 9 TDS.

Just checked again this morning its down to 8 now. It was 9 yesterday evening and 12 yesterday afternoon. I did not run it overnight so do you think the readings will fall as the membrane/ filtering components break in?

The only other thing I could think of would be the membrane. It was extremely difficult to push into the housing. But I did manage to get almost the 1/2 inch that it is supposed to be from the top of the housing.

Run it a little more and see what happen it should come down. I have heard guys talk about mis-seated membranes but you couldn't get the cap on and it would leak. I have seated 100's of membranes and never had a problem yet. I consider it an urban myth.

It has produced 10 gallons now. I was wondering if I should put the DI cartridge in the third canister or if I should wait a couple more gallons. The TDS is still 8 after RO only.

Not sure whos membrane they are using but if it a Desal that about all your going to get. Their rejection rate is only 96% which would give you 6-8 TDS you get a little better with a Filmtec 98%. Go ahead and put your DI in and you should get about 800 gallons of DI water. Your system should be flushed with 10 gallons of water through it.
