Kessil A360W Hands On

So I've been here for a while, and I have been keeping reef tanks of varying sizes up to my current 180 consistently since 2004. It's time to re-do the basement after 7 years, so its time to take everything apart for the re-carpet then start again. As far as lighting goes I have 3 different halides (from 150 to 400), 2 light rails and more T5's than I could shake a big stick at. I have wired at least 7 different Icecap ballasts without burning my house down. Yet.

I figured that now was the right time for me to try out some LEDs, and after some quiet contemplation I decided to pick up a new A360W. I did it partly because I had heard good things, partly because I am running T5's right now and miss my halide shimmer, and partly because I will have a new Apex controller shortly (which I was getting anyway) and I like the idea of dawn/dusk. Scratch that - it's mostly because I want to try something shiny and new.

Some thoughts, in no particular order:

- I've heard some things about this replacing anything up to and including a 400W halide. I have halides (one of which is a 400W lumenarc/icecap/XM combo sitting 2 feet away from this light). Based on my own eyes I can see this being somewhere between a 150 and a 250 (the latter being pretty optimistic IMHO, but maybe spectrum comes into play too). If you think that this is going to be as bright as a 400W halide in a decent reflector, then you probably haven't ever seen a 400W halide in a decent reflector.

- This thing runs cold. After 8 hours of running at 100% today, it was barely warm to the touch. I can believe that watt for watt this is more efficient than a halide (but I don't believe that we are talking about that huge a margin either).

- The color spread is decent, and ranges from too yellow to too blue for my tastes. I can't be scientific about how much light drop-off there is at the ends of the spectrum, but I actually rather like it in the middle, so lucky me.

- The packaging says it comes with both an interconnect cable and a controller cable. Mine didn't come with either. I'll not judge anyone on that until I seek out and receive a response.

- The light doesn't come on with the dimmer below 30%. I was hoping for a slightly lower introductory light level. If I can tweak the color with the controller, and come in at one end of the spectrum then I don't see this as too big of a deal (and over the tank it probably really isn't). Until I get the cable, and the controller I will not know.

- It appears to be well made, and initial setup is lego easy and went without a hitch.

- This is a point light source. This is more of a point light source than anything I have ever seen. You might think a halide in a reflector is a point light source, but it has nothing on this (the reflector will be reflecting and scattering a portion of the light over a relatively wide area, this is really really a point). This is both good and bad - the shimmer really is impressive, but the shadowing under any obstruction is severe (with multiple lights in the tank there would definitely be spill-over between lights, so I may be judging this a little too harshly, but I only have one so far to play with).

- The light spread is pretty ridiculous, and I will be running this much closer to the water than I would any other light I have owned. I'm not saying that this is good or bad, it just is.

So, my current plan, assuming that I can control it properly, is to get 2 more, and re-assess the shadowing in the tank with multiple lights. I do like it, and while I can believe it is turning power into light more efficiently than any other light I have owned, this isn't a magic lamp that can suddenly turn 90W of input into 400W of halide output either.

My final tank lighting will most likely contain at least 2 60" T5's to tune out some of the shading, but this is definitely going to be the main lighting solution. It's also possible that with some clever rockwork I could really grow to like the "deep dark cave" look (I know a cardinal fish that almost certainly would), and just stick with 3 x 360W's. Who knows - time will tell.

Anyway, so in short, it looks different to anything else I have tried, output-wise it doesn't suck but falls short of being a magic-powered superlight, and I have a new toy to play with. One day I will post pictures, but I am currently setting up the stock tank for the move, so everything is in more disarray than I wish to share. Maybe in a week or so.

Kessil360w

Hey Dave,

I live across the bridge in Southampton, PA. I have a 180 gallon mainly sps and softy. I have decided to go led and was pretty certain to buy the kessil360w. I debated between them the AI vega and DIY. I contacted kessil and they recommended 3 to 4 360w. I may start with three since I don't have a ton of coral yet. I would love to see pics or if possible to see in person. I have off today if you allow to see in person. If not no big deal pics would be great. I would like to purchase this week or next. I have 150 halide now so I am not use too 400w but I would like it to be more like the 250w halide range. Also would be nice to get or trade of someone somewhat local.

Hey Dave,

is your 180 a standard 72x24x24 tank? In your opinion what is the optimum distance from the water to get a good spread? Trying to figure if I can put these in canopy.
OT: I used to live in Cherry Hill - nice quiet town . It will be beautiful in a week or two when cherry trees start blooming.

Dave,
Nice little write up! I am setting up a new 65 gallon 36x18x24 and have made a decision to go with either these or the ReefBreeder lights.
My tank will be mostly SPS with a few other LPS in shaded areas. Do you think 2 of these would be good in the standard 360 ? I have a center brace, so overlapping of some light in the middle will be fine for me.
Cool to the touch and less wattage would be awesome! Also, do you know if the kessil puts any red in the little led cluster? Cannot find any info on it.
I will be following closely! Thanks!

My house is building site right now, and my tank is at the stage where 6 months ago I knew I was going to be tearing it down, so who cares about cleaning it? Not something I wish to share in person until it's back up after the rebuild.

I'll take some pictures in the next day or so, but this isnt over my main tank right now, it's currently growing my wife's seedlings while I make 120 gallons of RO water.

As for trade, I can currently trade Xenia by the square foot (I wish I was joking), but its going to take time to grow anything else. I've been letting it slide for a while and right now I have a clam, a xenia carpet and a few GBTA's to my name. The xenia ate everything else.

I don't have it over my main tank right now, and the T5 rig is really in the way for me to play with it all that much. From what I can tell though, I'm getting a minimal spotlighting and coverage of the area with it 3-4" off the surface, maybe less. Since I am manually holding it in place though, it's really hard for me to step back and take a good look.

I have a 12" tall canopy myself though (yes, over a standard 6x2x2), and I cannot imagine having any problems getting the spread I want due to insufficient height off the water. Beginning to wonder if submerging them is an option.

No problem hope the rebuild goes well. I saw after i posted there.is now a 360w version im looking at.im trying to build my coral up so in future if your looking to swap let ne know

Not sure if I can be of that much use. I haven't seen the standard 360 (or the standard 350 for that matter), so I cannot really advise you on spread. I'm pretty sure that it isn't actually out yet, judging by the fact that no-one has one for sale yet, but maybe someone with the regular 350 can offer you a more informed opinion, since the spread of the regular 360 (whenever it comes out) is likely to be similar. My gut feeling is that two standards would be more than adequate, and two wides would be way more spread than you need. I'm just some guy on the Internet with an opinion though, so caveat lector.

I think that Kessil keeps their LED information pretty close to their chest as far as composition goes, and I'm a bit hesitant to start staring directly into a very bright point light source for any length of time to try and figure it out.
