KidReefers 40 breeder sps build

Dude!! You are 13 and u know so much!!!! I am just blown away with the amount of stuff u know already!! I think when I was your age I was glad I could tie my shoe laces myself lol.
Keep going bro just keep going. Your tank is looking fine and just be patient with stocking the fishes. Add very few to start with bcoz it lead to an imbalance if u add too many too soon. Corals are ok you can stoak more and keep an eye on your parameters thats all.
Congrats on your frag addition!!
I am just glad you are not one of those "nemo killers" you know ur stuff and you have read up quite good. All you need is experience and you will do just great. Great start and welcome to this great hobby.
Good luck to ya and keep updating.
Happy reefing lil reefer :)

Just wanted to add... Your planning on this setup is commendable.
And your passion for this hobby at such an young age is truly great.
Your spending your hard earned money wisely. Keep it up buddy!!

Thanks!! I always think, never do something until its 100 percent thought out. As for the tank I think its coming along pretty well. There is a frag swap up in buffalo on oct 29th so I am definitely going to that to get a bunch of frags, gotta save up my lawn money lol.I really enjoy this hobby and learning from it as well. Thanks for the input reef noob(even though you dont seem like one lol)!!!!

Keep it up! I had my first tank when I was 12, and now I'm a 48 year old kid!!!

Awesome update my friend! I had the pleasure of meeting Julian last year at MACNA and he is without a doubt among the most knowledgable people in this industry. Which book are you reading?

The wicker basket is a great idea and really hides the ATO reservoir well. You ready for Oct. 29 or WHAT? I know I am, don't be late... early bird gets the worm! ;)

Ur welcome bro. Keep that thirst for knowledge burning inside ya. As for me, though I hav been in this hobby quite a while now but still feel like a noob, coz there is always new stuff happening in our hobby and the learning never stops. I like to try stuff, some work and some misfires. This hobby is ever changing and that's the best part about it.
Do drop by my build thread, hope it will giv ya some pointers.
Keep us all posted on ur venture here. :)

The reservoir in basket idea is cool. Looks nice too and blending well with the surroundings!!
Just a suggestion.... Why the aqua lifter pump? It has history of failing quite fast. Wouldn't it be better to get a reliable submersible power head?
Be aware of the float valve failing and the whole Kalk water being dumped into the display tank. Just a word of precaution. :)

Nice tank. I am in about the same situation with my parents. I to have set up a 40 gallon breeder and had 3 green chromis( now there is two).

Are you serious, thats awesome!!!!, from his book he seems extremely intelligent! The book that im reading is called CORALS, and it has a bunch of IDs on all types of sps corals, which is why I got it.

I cant wait for tthis day, its going to be awesome cuz Ill be able to get my tank stocked!! Hope to see you there Jon!! Also I saw your going to make your build thread soon, if so i have a couple pounds of leftover dry rock from reefcleaners that i could probably bring to the swap if you wanted it, let me know.

Do drop by my build thread, hope it will giv ya some pointers.

DEFINITELY!

I chose the aqua lifter pump because it was the only one that had a prebuilt filter for the pump. Since i am dosing kalk i didn't want to suck up the settled impurities at the bottom of the reservoir. Hopefully it doesn't fail for me. About the float valve I don't think it will fall because I used the bracket instead of the suction cup mount. Again hopefully it doesnt fail for me lol.

Thanks! that that stinks about the chromis. For me they are schooling still and hopefully I can get another fish in the tank so they dont start making territories and split up and fight. Do you have a thread, ill be sure i to check it out if you do.

Looking good!!

Thanks western reefer

Yah just made it. My tank has been set up a while tho. I have some aglea issues.
My chromis eleminated one of them with 5 other fish in the tank. My female molly used to chase them. She did not make it.

Your build looks like it is going quite well!! If you would like, you can subscribe to the Pittsburgh Marine society. We have all kinds of people in there from all over PA (mostly Local) many do go toward Erie occasionally. Also we have a few stores here that stock some real nice SPS colonies. I myself am actually beginning my own sort of mini frag farm to see what I can get propogated and growing. Pm me if you have any other questions.

Hey about the aqua lifter and kalk, I can tell you straight up that the pump WILL fail one way or the other for that use. If you read my thread I had two failures in the 2 months I was using it in my temp bin. Both times the drip rate turned into a firehose for absolutely no reason at all...be warned! You at least have floats to control it so you might not hot that bad of a time WHEN it shoots water instead of drips it. Scary system really, hangin on the edge of cheap equipment hoping one or the other doesnt fail is never a good situation but its what ya got and I understand that. Not trying to be mean or anything.

I totally agree with Chris on this point....Kalk overdose can be a nightmare, So be sure you hook it up with care and proper choice of equipment.

oops forgot to post this pic that shows the reservoir with the tank so you get a idea what it looks like altogether

KidReefer

Just noticed this....is that your power strip with timers on the bottom right hand corner on the floor? Not a good idea if thats the case.
Raise it up ...maybe install it higher on the wall behind the tank.
Salt water and Electricity are a bad bad combination...

Hoping to see more updates from ya

And thanks for visiting my humble build thread :)

Whats the thread called?? Ill definitely check it out! and do you use ro/di because it could be the culprit of the algae issues.

No offense taken :) . I appreciate helpful advice. Just to be sure did you have the sediment filter attached to the pump? just curious cuz that could have caused it. I was actually surprised when you said this pump would fail because one of the other reasons I bought it was because of the good reviews people had with dosing kalk.

If I soon find that somethings wrong with it, then I will buy a better pump and never even speak of toms aqualifter again considering how important this piece of equipment is, but this is all I have for now, and it works pretty well. I also saw your build!! Extremely impressive, hopefully mine can be that good someday.

as i said to chris above, I thought this was a good pump and based on how its working for me right now Id say it is a good pump IMO. if at the slightest sign however it clogs, breaks, etc., its going right into the trash! Also I saw your build. Its amazing. I cant wait for everything to start growing in. It will be fantastic!!

Sadly yes that is a powerstrip. However some time in the future I think I am going to buy a panal of wood and mount/screw the powerstrips etc on the side of the stand a few inches up in the air. Recently I put a cloth/towel over the powerstrip to avoid any splashes on it. Also I am extremely careful during water changes not to get anything wet. I will try and update as much as possible but I do not see anything major changing in the next few weeks that would be worth updating, except maybe the powerstrip panal I was talking about. Thanks for visiting my thread reef noob :)

Hey bud, no sweat on the toms. Like I said its whatcha got. Ive used far worse equipment in the past for much more critical things! lol Its just something to keep on top of! Make sure you keep that prefilter clean(no I did not use this and it could very well be what caused my problems...) keep your floats clean and protected from the kalk so they dont get crusted up and as a kid spendin LOTS of time in your room im sure checkin the tank out, its not like you wont stay on top of it!

When it comes to the power strip. D what you can to get that protected. If for no other reason than any corrosion can cause outlets to go. It WILL happen while youre away, thats just the way it works! lol Maybe install a cheap shelving unit above it to hold your books that way it protects the strip AND is useful and aestecically pleasing.

Make sure you keep that prefilter clean

rinse it out every week after refilling the reservoir :)

keep your floats clean and protected from the kalk so they dont get crusted up

I wipe them of with a napkin during water changes :)

Maybe install a cheap shelving unit above it to hold your books that way it protects the strip AND is useful and aestecically pleasing.

This is a very good idea!! I will see if I can do something like that!
