Killing star polyps

I keep the GSP at bay by placing my branching hammer coral on it. When the hammer inflates during the day any GSP that it rubs against begins to recede and die. It takes a while for it to fully clear a rock and if there is any remnant of the stuff it is guaranteed to come back.

Try putting a small frag of hydnophoia on top of the GSP. I bet that within a week the hydno will have killed off everything in its territory.

This is what i was told as well..

if u cant kill it, might as well control its growth, get some rubble rocks and form a border around it, as it over grows the rocks, remove the rocks, and add more. anthony calfo described this in a method of controlling hydroids.
now u have frags of gsp to take to the lfs

fluke tabs do work! I used it on my system that was completely overrun with Xenia. It was amazing... in a couple of days it was all gone. My tank now has never been doing better.

The only downside is the fluke tabs will kill any shrimp you have in the tank. So be sure to move them to another tank for a little while.

I was considering this option, but how long before I can place my shrimp back in. Also I'm assuming it will kill ALL other crabs, pods?

I just fragged the remaining bits of my hydnophora which was in a losing battle with GSP. I thought it would be the winner...but nope.

I agree, that is what i do with mine, you have to pay close attention to the border rocks and get them out and move them to another spot before the gsp starts moving over from them to the area you dont want it to grow, and when your ready to move the border rocks use a razor blade to cut the gsp mat (dont worry about cutting around the polyps, i just slice right through them)

I've got some star polyps I'm trying to get rid of as well, mine are purple. Started with just a couple polyps on a frag I bought and it has taken over, even growing up the stalk of my leather coral (peeled off easily but it had deteriorated that part of the stalk to almost nothing). I have found 2 ways to get rid of it, first if you can remove the rock hit it with a blow torch, and you have to hit it long and hard to get it off. I've seen many asking if another coral will kill it and I have found that frogspawn will win the battle. These two methods got rid of about 10% and now I have just been picking it off with tweezers, sometimes I get lucky and get a large chunk but otherwise its slow going. I'm also trying to cover it up with smaller rocks, not sure if this helps or not. I'd like to get it growing on the back wall or something but by the time I get fed up enough to start messing with it I'm so mad I just wanna kill it not relocate it.

haha good luck i know the way the get loads of em at my LFS is to throw a frag in a blender really quick and then put in a tank. the friggin things grow on everything and the only way they get em out is to scrape off the glass.

You need to take the rock/rocks out of the tank and but them in 3 gallons of SW.
Add 1 Fluke tab for 30 min with a powerhead.
Take the rock/rocks out of that water and put it in a seprate bin with new SW and a heater for 3 weeks, no light.
after 3 weeks scrub off remaining GSP with a brush.

Trust me this was my tank:

Its a PIA but this method works

I think your tank looked nice, not sure why you killed it all. You still had some bare rock in the back, should have gotten some anthelia or something to cover that over. I love tanks where you cannot see the rock.

I didnt kill it all. The big rock in the middle. I traded it to someone on RC and he sent me some live rock for it. I now have one decent sized rock with it on it in my new tank. but it stays far away from all the other rocks. If anyone wants some let me know this rock grows like a weed. The rest of it needed to go BC my new tanks is primarily SPS
