Kmu´s in wall 400g build!!!

even though i only used about 50 lbs of marco rock when i set up my 120g, i never used acid, just a couple of minutes with presure washer and into the tank for cycling. that was 5 years ago, no side effects

Got to start building the sump tomorrow but don't know if I should get a single large sump or have dual modular sumps"¦

I would rather go with the bigger single sump, the only potential problem I see is that with a big sump once I set the stand, sump and tank in place I won't be able to remove the sump from under the stand unless I move the tank (300g of water, 300 lbs of live rock, 300 lbs of sand, heavy acrylic tank) and stand (heavy steel!!!) from the inside of the fishroom and slide the sump out to the side of the stand.

What do you guys think/suggest?

THX in advance

The one thing about dual sumps is you must have equal flow going into both of them from the tank. I used dual sumps on my old set up. It worked but if one drain ever got clogged it caused a slight issue

Corey

On the dual sump set up the drain from the tank would fall on the left side sump, go trough the skimmer, then pass trough the bulkheads to the right side sump, the refugium and then back to the main display tank.

Both sumps would be getting the same flow

This is a picture of my dual sump set-up + refugium............Budster:bum:

The problem I had was my pump was too big to have all the water go into one sump. I had it turned back a ton and it still didn't work. So on my new build I went with one sump. But a smaller pump would also work

Your pump was not too big for your sumps, your capacity to move the water from one to the other was under-sized. In the pictures above you will notice that I have 2) 2" lines between the sumps/refugium, well when I set it up I only had 1) 2" line and the system would not move the 2000g/hr. that my pump puts into the DT. I also move another 600g/hr. into the refugium that drains back into the return sump, so the system moves 2600g/hr. through 2" lines. IN addition I move 600g/hr. from the collector to my skimmer, then it drains to the refugium along with the 600g/hr. from the return pump, total 1200g/hr. through the fuge. Movement of any amount of water is possible if components are sized properly. The advantage to two sumps is, if sized properly they can be used as an automatic water change station by draining them both simultaneously to with-in a couple inches above the pump in-take and then closing drain and re-filling sumps with new salt water. I do 40g water changes with never turning the pump off or shutting any part of the system off. I have 55g top-off tank, 55g mix tank, and 55g supply tank plumbed to my RODI, run by pressure valve keeping at least 55g RODI on hand at all times..............................Budster:bum:

kmu,
on the same boat as you bro, tagging along. Research mode right now for my 400gal set up. How much did u steal those Hydras lights? please advise. Thank you.

GREAT SET UP MAN!!!

I think Im gonna go for it and do a single large sump set up, if the are any problems in the future acrylic can be welded in site thats the good thing.

I got 72" of space under the stand, should I do a 48" long sump or go for a larger 60" sump"?

This is what a 60" Long Sump would look like under the stand, I think its the best option out there

I would re-consider the size of the Refugium, I've got 70g stand alone Refugium and I could use more! Other than that it looks good!.................Budster

Well got the final sump drawings done and its being built right now... should move the stand, sump and tank this weekend hopefully.

Decided to go the largest possible with the refugium and divide it by 2, that way I can have chaeto on one and the other one with some live rock rubble, fish and frags!!!

The fishroom is complete

Thingsare looking good kmu. definitely a great decision on going with the 60" sump. What are the full true dimensions of the sump going to be?

The full Sump set up is 60" long, 30" wide 18" deep thats including the fresh water reservoir that is built into the sump.

Fresh water reservoir is 60" long, 10" wide, 18" tall
Drain area from tank is 8" long, 20" wide, 18" tall
Skimmer area is 20" long, 9" tall, 20" wide
Refugiums are 35" long, 10" wide, 9" tall each one
Return pump area is 8" long, 20" wide, 18" tall
