I picked up kole tang yesterday, acclimated him and put him into qt. Shortly alfter I noticed his mouth is stuck open!! It was normal at the lfs when I bought him. Is this normal, maybe stress or should I be concerned here?
I guess I should add some specifics, 20g cube tank parameters are all good. He is in there with a small pinkface wrasse and a couple damsels. He has not eaten anything, I have tried some frozen mixed foods, nori and there is live rock in there with calapura on it (my yellow loves the stuff), the kole has shown no interest in food. Give me your thoughts.
It's hard to tell from the pic since they do have funny mouths full of bristles. I had a hard time getting mine to eat prepared food. It would graze on the algae in the DT tank all day. Unfortunately I did not QT mine and he brought ich with him and died before I had him eating. I plan on trying one again after going through the fallow period and treating the rest of the fish.
Have you tried any garlic additives? They are supposed to help stimulate appetite.
His mouth looks ok to me..my kole's mouth is rarely closed I think it is just part of their personality..it took me about 3 days before I could get it to eat anything and it loves spectrum pellets and meaty foods still having issues with seaweed though.
I have a Kole tang too, and he's always opening & closing his mouth like a singer. It's hard to tell from your pic, but if his mouth is always open like that, there may be a problem. I'd try to get him to eat Nori seaweed (off a veggie clip or rubber-banded on a rock).
I tried garlic, and it is a no go. I have also tried spectrum pellets but he did not bite. I thought he would eat the algae off the rock in there but a he hasnt touched it, and he is also ignoring the nori on the clip. He has some decent girth to him so I dont think he'll starve to death any time soon but I would love to see him eat something.
His mouth does move, ir does the open and close motion but it doesnt move much and it never closes. Is this normal for these guys? I did not notice it in lfs. Someone tell me this is normal and Im freaking out for no reason.
Your latest description of his mouth sounds normal to me. How do the gills look? Are they breathing too fast, or at a "normal" rate?
Was he eating in the fish store? My first Kole tang took about 7 days to acclimate himself to my QT. During that time he didn't eat prepared foods, but did occasionally nip at the established LR, which had lots of pods and algae. Eventually, he learned how to eat NLS pellets and Nori from another fish I had in QT.
I think you guys are right. I think he just needs some time to settle in. I just saw him take a few nips at the pvc as if he was eating algea although there is none on there. I'll just keep offering nori and NLS pellets and hope he catches on soon. I'll keep you posted on his progress.
I wanted to update this. He seems better, and is eating NLS pellets. Thank you to those of you who helped. You were right, I just needed to give him time.
Ha ha, I know what you mean. Out of all the fish in the store my wife picked out the kole, I mean theyre ok looking but would not have been my first choice. Im excited to get the tang and the pickface wrasse I bought with it into the display. Thanks again.
On a sad note, both the tang and wrasse died. They were consumed by ich out of no where. I have never seen the parasite go from no signs to killing within a couple days. By the time I got the tank down to hypo it was to late for the tang and the wrasse died a day later. It really ****es me off that lfs's do not qt new fish and sell them diseased. There is a pretty heafty mark up on the fish, they should be treating for disease before they are sold to people.
