Ok well my kole is in week 4 of qt now. I just want opinions on its behavior as it seems odd to me (first tang 3rd fish).

I have two videos for comparison here.

week 2

today

Please let me know your thoughts. Main difference between the two videos is that in today's video I do not have the powerhead on but rather introduced the big bubbles alongside the sponge filter.

QT is 40 gallons and did a 40% WC yesterday.

Should I add it to my main display now? Is it stressed?

I have kept Kole's before, and he looks fine in both videos. I have had a sick kole before and he was literally laying on his side breathing heavily. This guy looks pretty good. Just my 2 cents

Hi Rob

Is there a reason the color is lighter in the second video. It is my understanding that the color turns lighter due to poorer water quality... but all params are in check.

I was thinking of doing a freshwater dip adjusted to the proper ph and then adding to the tank. Or could I just add to the tank directly?

Why is this fis in QT to begin with? Is he new? I think he is free of ick, so i would add him to the display, he is probably freaking out without proper cover. also they like to scrub algea off glass and rocks, mine were never big algea eatters from the clip.

Yes the fish was new. I wanted to start off right by adding all incoming specimens to QT first to prevent an outbreak in the main tank.

If he did have ich, would I be able to plainly see it and would it be constantly rubbing things?

I FW dip ALL my fish before before adding them to the main display. Regardless of how long they were in QT or how they look. Anywhere from 4 to 6 minutes usually.

Adjust the pH, match temps, and I stick in an airstone also.

I would not put him through the stress of a freshwater dip without good reason. He has been QT'd, and has no signs of ick, let it go. Freshwater dips are very stressful on saltwater fish. I had to dip my yellow tang 3 times to treat black ich. It wasn't pleasant for him.

A 6 minute FW dip isn't that stressful on a fish. The preventative benefits outweigh the 6 minutes of stress by a long shot,

FW dips are SOP in all aquariums and large fish operations, and it should be in our tanks as well.

If your Kole has been in QT for 4 weeks without any sign of disease, you should definitely add him to the display. These fish don't do well in QT and, in fact, many people don't even quarantine them if they look good (me included).

It's been added and colors came back real well... nice deep brown with the lines and such... is picking at the rocks and also looks like he's asking the blood shrimp to clean it hmmm or perhaps is just sitting near the shrimp b/c it is a cave... either way though I do not see any ich and perhaps it's just some dead tissue... i didn't see a 'cleaning' going ont hough..

will post some video soon.

All seems well!

Do the fish sometimes get little grains of sand stuck on them? I saw one or two and I was paranoid it was ich... now I don't see them anymore lol

All is good. Will take some video today hopefully.

Just curious, did you decide to FW dip before adding him, or no?

No I didn't end up doing it jenjen. I took a good long look and didn't see anything. There are no spots on him now either. Doing real well zooming around the tank and poking at the rocks.

Glad to hear he's doing well.

I'm with Abulgin on this... a properly prepared FW dip is NOT stressfull on a fish... or well not to the point that I would worry or hesitate about performing one on any new addition.

Again I disagree. I dipped my yellow tang 3 times due to black ich and to see his reaction in the bucket and after being put into the tank you would know it is stressful. You are taking a fish that is made to be saltwater and putting it in freshwater, why would you not think this was stressful? Do you think its enjoyable to the fish, think about it. Anyway to each his own, but I would not do it to a new Qt'd fish who has already been through enough stress in being transfered from petstore to home qt, then to main tank. Besides FW dips do not stop ick anyway, which was this persons concern. I do think FW dips have merit at times, but not in this case.
