I just dosed the 3rd time with kanaplex but its still getting worse. what could this be? should I do another round of kanaplex or should I try something else?
Using Google and Google Scholar (I have never seen this issue or heard of it before this) I could find no successful treatment protocol. I found one instance where the fish lived a fairly long time and it sort of cured itself; I found a couple more where the fish died quickly. But while their description matched the OP, diagnosis was unclear. Sorry, cannot find anything useful on this.
I personally would dose Kanaplex one more time and then just see what happens. Sometimes hope for the best is all you can really do...

thanks for the help guys, much appreciated! I originally thought it was tang finger print, but it's starting to open up a bit. it looks like a little chunk is missing. maybe it could be u marinum? or something like that? if that's the case would prazi do anything? I'm really trying to dose copper last.

If it's Uronema, prazi won't work (nor will copper). Formalin or acriflavin are the appropriate treatment (similar to treatment for Brooklynella). Metronidozole is also recommended.

so it seems like the kole tang has a spot coming up on his dorsal fin. being that the spots are spreading I don't think the kenaplex is working. i will do a water change tomorrow and try something else. what should I try? I have copper, prazi, and metro. I could buy something else if need be, I just want to have a plan against what ever this could be. anyone have ideas?

I'm just wondering if some LR rubble would absorb some of the antibiotics or not? I have a few small pieces in the tank just to get the bio going. I know you can't have it in with copper, but does it absorb all meds or just copper based ones?
IME; absorption with antibiotics is usually pretty minimal. Probably a shot in the dark but... have you tried a f/w dip with this fish? Just to look for flukes?

no I didn't even think flukes could be a issue. flukes can do damage like this?

Well, it honestly looks like a bacterial infection to me. But since the antibiotics are having no impact, then it could be a virus. But since there's really nothing you can do for a virus (in fish) anyway, best to troubleshoot for other ailments. :eek1:
For a f/w dip, you can use RODI or even RO water. Temp & pH match the dip water with the tank water the fish is coming from. To match the pH, usually squirting a little tank water into the bowl does the trick. Aerate the water beforehand (if possible) and use a clear glass bowl to do the dip. Dip the fish for no more than 5 mins. If he has flukes, you should see tiny white worms (flukes) pour out of him (especially the gills) at around the 3 or 4 min mark. Inspect the bottom of bowl for flukes after the dip is over. Being this is a tang, don't be surprised if he "plays dead" while administering the dip. But as long as he is breathing, he is fine. After putting him back in the tank, the fish may appear disorientated or unable to maintain equilibrium for a few mins. On rare occasions, I've had the hold the fish upright (using surgical gloves) and even gently glide the fish thru the water to get s/w flowing back thru his gills. But I've yet to ever lose a fish during or after a f/w dip.

crap idk about this...I guess when I do the water change in the am I'll try the freshwater dip...I'm kinda nervous but I'll give it a shot.
The other option is to hit him with the "kitchen sink" and hope something cures whatever is ailing him. I've done this before with mixed success. You've already done the antibiotics; so start next with Prazipro & Metro (i.e. API General Cure), and then after that give him a month in copper.

yeah I was thinking about this last night. I'll do an other week of the metro and kanaplex together, then a week of prazi and metro. I'll do a week of just prazi, then here is where I get stumped. I don't like the idea of copper, but I know it hits a few things at once. is it possible to do the TT method and be done at this point, or do I really need to do copper? I have cupramine and the seachem kit, I'm just real nervous I'll kill something at that point.
TT only treats one parasite - Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans). If something like Velvet pops up, you'd then need to treat w/copper. A good alternative to copper is Chloroquine phosphate (thread here). For the record, some still consider CP "experimental". But after successfully treating over 100 fish with it, I consider it proven.

I've had about 20 fish in full dose of cupramine (.5 or higher, mostly higher) out of pure frustration with my fowlr tank from sometime in december all the way to the end of March. Fish include wrasses, a butterfly, gobies, a dogface puffer, clowns, dwarf angels, 4 tangs, and more. No ill effects at all, but I'm now pretty sure after about my 3rd try at ridding ich from this tank it is finally gone.
I had previously tried an 8 week fallow, and 6 weeks of cupramine twice. Ich came back each time. So these guys have certainly had more than their fair share of cupramine. Not to mention they had it when the tank went fallow. I'm ABSOLUTELY convinced that cupramine is not behind people losing fish, but ammonia and/or freshly mixed salt water are the real killers.
Anyhow, I would try the metro on your fish. I have had great results with strange things using metro.

wow thanks for the reply. yeah I'm on the second dose of metro now so we'll see what happens at the end of the week. right now the ammonia is still showing in the test kit even though I have LR ceramic tubes and a few foam pads in the filter so I've been dosing prime to detoxify it. my hope is by the time I'm done dosing metro and prazi the tank will be able to go with out the prime.
on the bright side, this wound seems to be doing better the past day or so. hopefully it continues to heal.
