I'm lookin for a return pump that does not generate alot of heat in the 700 gal range. Right now i'm using a mag 9 and between my new light fixture and that pump durning that last hot day my tank temp reached 87. Ya i scrambled my a#%$ off to get my fans out. I have read that the mag 9.5 is a big heat generater. looking at quit ones. What do you you think folks.

Dave, I think some well placed fans should take care of your heat issues. Evaporation is an excellent way to cool.

Dave, I am not so sure the Mag is your main heat source...

Just a thought...I am running a mag 9.5 as well and my tank NEVER reaches over 80 (granted mine is in my basement which is a little cooler, but I would not think the pump is putting out that much heat). Is your heater functioning properly?

What is the normal steady state for your temp?

How hot did it get in your house?

Frank you hit the nail on the head thanks. The heater was bad. My tank usually runs 79 to 80, 84 max on hot days, but even then it would cool at night. When I looked at the temp saw 87 I about had a heart attack. And then when it was not cooling at night 85 constant with three 6” and 1 box fan I knew there was a bigger problem. Thought pump first and never thought heater I don’t know why I didn’t. Should have been fist on my list. Guess I was panicked. I also have a 250 watt MH fixture now that is 4” off the water thought that maybe it. Turned it off no change. Can’t imagine how hot it would have gotten with the rouge heater and no fans. Oh well lesion learned.
