how could you not see anything wrong

I cant say anything about his jelly tanks I think thats retty cool but what i dont see is him teaching poeple how to test water how to QT and things people really need to know.

im sure people mess with there tanks and mess things up but that not the isue here,
a while back I saw him does calcium part A and B into a tank without messuring or testing for anything (I looked for that vid but cant find it anymore so he must have removed it) and tells people it's ok this guy is not providing quality service almost every tank is running bio balls an no skimmer (whats up with that)
the people that hire out dont know much about those things and its up to him to educate them of the imortants of things like a skimmer and there is the problem, HE himself dont see them as important

these vids posted are just the icing on the cake there are other that give bad infomation as well but can no longer find them

Just keep it civil gang. Debate but no fighting please. I'm gonna catch the news and down a brew, as was suggested.

cant speak for mr. tang but im not upset in the least I was just curious if was the only one that feels this way about what he is teaching on his vids.

*hugs Waterkeeper*

Badwrasse, i know, Ive watched a bunch of his videos. At one point I was thinking what a good service he provides, and on YouTube no less. But then when I started hearing that "I don't have time for goofing around with unnecessary gadgets" I was like "huh?"
Now if Melev made videos like that , that would be a different thing entirely.
Even though lafishguy makes no good sense, I do admire his choice to have it on YouTube . Bringing reefkeeping to YouTube was a forward thinking idea.

thats the same thing I though too when I saw his vids for the first time a was like "cool salwater tank vids" but then I watched another and another and then I started paying more attention to things and seeing things about his vids that dont make sense like how is there so many people that want dead coral and not liverock how every tanks still runs bio balls and no skimmer, its all BS he could sell them on the idea of live rock, and skimmers, what I think is he doesnt want to,....WHY? not sure but something is off

melev is the man he makes podcasts too but he also makes sense (and cool sumps)

but I do comend him for taking the time to make the vids and posting on youtube.

I'm sure in "his day" he was an expert, but so often do the experts close their minds and refuse to hear whats new. Lets face it things change over time in every hobby as we continue to learn more and more.

I agree with bringing the vids to youtube. I always respect when people take their time to spread the word of this amazing hobby. There is another guy on youtube called limpitsreef. He has some pretty decent stuff on making a sump and modding a koralia.

Three Dog Night did a concert in Cinncy last night and I wish I had gone. :D

But even though it is my birthday you won't find me playing Doris Day and Sentimental Journey. My period but not my type of music. ;)

So what's different between the video guy and people here? Do you folks not read the posts here and the responses? Standard 50/50 information here but let's filet this guy. There are people here that run successful tanks off tapwater, and some of us run RODI, oh yea others run only RO. Just easier to find fault.

Ah, put here we have someone that is claiming to be a professional. That holds one to a higher standard.

We get reefkeeper of all levels on RC and some do indeed use tapwater and poor equipment. Hopefully, we try to get them to acquire knowledge and better manage their tank. Whenever we have a debate about using RO/DI there are always those that chime in and tell of the problems it created when they were using tapwater.

Sure, some people get away with it long term but they are the exception. When you take on reefkeeping as a business you owe the customer the best husbandry methods available and should not be espousing that making SW with RO/DI takes up too much of your time. You get paid for your time so do the best job you can.

Enough with the soapbox preaching. I did find the clips somewhat informative and amusing at times.

I agree somewhat with what people are saying about him but I love to watch his videos in a perverse sort of way. :p By far the funniest was the one about the cylinder tank that he had to replace because of some problem with the acrylic clouding up or something like that. He pulled the "old" one out and took it too a "coral" place to have the center column of -- wait for it -- rubber corals to be removed. He then exchanged it for the replacement, took it back to the "coral" guy and then back to the owners house (absolutely gorgeous house by the way).

They then proceeded to remove the corrugated cardboard wrap and one of his "helpers" pulls out a folding box cutter and proceeds to cut through the paper that was under the cardboard. Well you can guess what they found -- a couple of long "scratches" in the acrylic. While Jim scratches (no pun intended  ) his head trying to figure out how this happened, the culprit proceeds to back out of the conversation trying to hide. Hilarious.

A couple of episodes later he was trying to figure out a way to wash the algae off the rubber "corals". He finally brought in a gasoline powered pressure washer and piped it from the tank to the patio and then pressure washed the "corals" inside the tank.

Whatever your criticism is (and there are quite a few), you have to admit he is entertaining. Sort of like the so called news programs on network TV -- more entertaining that informative.

as I have said all ready before it his addatude towards learning new things and using better equiptment he calls the tools we all use as "TOYS" did you watch the third vid in the first post?

and aslo I would like to know the deffenition of a "successful tank" it seems like it would be subjective , whats successful to some is not so good to others , and to me keeping fish alive is way differant from thriving.

who on here keeps a successful tank on tap water please speak up
