Large Airpump Driver Skimmer

go on ebay, thats where i bought mine from, 65lpm linear air pump, draws 35w and cost like 70$ shipped. they havea smaller one too

well i dont see how the placement of the gatevalve can effect the fluctuating water level, as it is right now the valve is serving no purpose, as it if 100% closed. i did fool around with the air supply and found out than when i add more air and lower that water level to compensate, i loose all fine adjustment of the water levlel( using the pipe to adjust height, since i dont think you can see that i have 1 1/4 pipe coming out of the skimmer and then i havea piece of 1" pipe wrapped in teflon tape that slides inside the 1 1/4" , thats my water height adjustment part) and the skimemr starts surging with lots of air. but if i turn it down my bubble size drops back down to less than 1mm and i get a stable foam head, water hieght and no surging

I just would really like to use some more air, so i am thinking that i need to make another air diffuser , maybe this way i can use more air and still have tiny bubbles and not have any surging

If you place the valve after the T, the backpressure will go up the end the of T that's exposed to air in addition to the main skimmer body. Think about it... if the valve were closed, water would come out the top of the T.

if the valve is before the T, the backpressure only affects the water level in the main skimmer body.

you want the drain section starting from the T onwards to be unrestricted.

oh yeah pic of the skimmate nice nasty ones. I have been trying to match pumps to stone at depth. I think that is going to be hard than building the skimmer.

i agree with you in the valve placement in relationship to the Tee but as i ahve it plumbed, the valve does absolutely nothing excpet allow me to open it up to drain the skimmer.

Zap, maybe your tube is too small at the top to run that much air thru it? Maybe your output is too restrictive? Who knows, maybe you should just give replumbing the output a shot, couldn't hurt.

Covey, I will have to go over there before he empties the bucket, it has about 2 gallons of funk already. That skimmer is interesting, have you seen the ones that H2OEng makes? His are real nice, and I like his better then that deltec.

Here is a picture of my skimmer and a picture of how im feeding the airstones into the skimmer

Keefy, i suggest u pass your air hose thru the water outlet, all the way down. that way you can add more hoses.

hows your skimmate? does it go out the elbow bove easily? wat size pvc are you using?

4" pvs and its rigid air tube that goes down to the bottom i just ordered an pressure rated air pump so i dont know i have a tetra pump on there now that doesnt push any air into the stones but it should work with no issues at all i know someone using the exact design and its really kicking but ill let you know more once i get the new pump in

Zap, where you refering to the skimmer that I built, or one of the hijackers? LOL

The skimmer is pretty much incredible. The tank it is on isn't really doing it any justice, since it is pretty clean anyway but it has been putting in the work and said tank has never been cleaner. We will get some more pix soon.

Steve68, it is running pretty wet despite the neck build up. We will be adding a wetneck shortly to keep the buildup and cleaning to a minimum.

How would a wetneck be different? What is a wetneck?

well i took your advice and replumbed my return from the skimmer, did it just like your pic and it works great, no more fluctuation anymore and now i can use that air that i have. so what are the specs of your pump that is running those 4 stones

Tim

A wetneck is a device that poures a curtain of water down the sides of the neck. It makes the neck "slippery" and allows the skimmate to climb up a lot easier w/ out depositing nearly as much crap on the sides. You can reduce cleaning significantly using a wetnec, but they don't work very well on small skimmers.

Zap, glad that you got your skimmer running good. I cant remember the exact specs, something like 4.5 CFM overall and 38 DB sound. I can tell you that it is very quiet, and pumps a lot of air. The pump is a alita 80 and is easy to find the specs on the net.

now what air stones are you running for that thing. since i am running a basswood cube but if i turn the air up alot then i overpower the stone and get lots of huge bubbles, so i was thinking to run a few of the stones that you have and just live with the larger bubble size that those stones make
