Large Colonies

Lately, I've seen some disturbing trends with zoanthids (and many other corals for that matter) where by someone aquires a small frag of the latest fad coral, and as soon as any growth appears, its fragged in two and sold supposedly to "reover the cost" of the original frag that was hyped to rediculously high prices anyways. I see collections consisting of dozens of 2-3 polyp frags and while they are spectacular looking, and while I recognize that with the escalated prices some of these corals are getting this may be the only way to get your collection started, there have to be people who collect these to actually grow them out into larger colonies. So I am encouraging anyone and everyone to post pictures of their large colonies of zoanthids. Come on, I know they're out there. Even if its some "ugly" browns, I know there are some larger sized pieces that people have had for months, years even just growing.

I'll have to dig deeper into the troves of photos that I have but here's what I was able to find fairly quickly. Unfortunately, a few of them I no longer have due to a water quality issue at the end of summer and beginning of fall...

Also, please note that it is not my intention to offend anyone with this thread. If thats how you like to run things in your tank/system, thats your ideal, I just find it sad that people are getting more and more concerned with the potential $$$ they see crossing their eyes when the lates limited edition this, or rare that is flashed in photos online. The "I've got to have that" kicks in, and after spending a small fortune on it, people see the potential money sitting there and have to have a piece of the action before the fad is over and they no longer command such a high price. If you're offended, instead of flaming me here, or starting some off shoots of discussion feel free to take it up wth me via PM. Its my goal to see some of the larger colonies people have grown out, not to start a war over individual practices in the reef tanks.

Marvin's tank always makes me question if mine will ever be that beautiful and diverse. I love the large colonies also. And Marv, you have plenty of large colonies. The only zoa that we have had since buying the tank has grown from a 6 polyp colony to over 200 polyps. Here's a pic of the colony in May:

He's larger now and that's with several frags being removed due to overgrowth.

awesome job guys... growing your frags to colonies... I hope to do the same with my higher end zoas.. I've been trying to take progression shots of some of my mini colonies so I hope I do a good job...

again, good job guys.. keep 'em coming... always love seeing progression shots from frags to huge colonies... :)

And although these aren't that large, I grew them out from 3-5 polyp frags... :D

I have yet to sell any frags, besides to local club members... And I am no where near recovering my costs... LMAO :D I don't see how anyone makes back their money in this hobby...

Marv or CT_vol, what do you feed your tank? Water params including CA? Thanks!

Sorry, I've been out of town... Really I don't target feed mine... Once in a while, some of my larger paly's will gobble up some mysis while I'm feeding my fish... Not sure about my current parameters... But I can tell you for sure I have 0 nitrites, 0 nitrates and 0 ammonia... The tank I took those pics of I rarely dose... Its my zoo/softie tank... :) I pretty much leave it to its own devices and do monthly/bimonthly 30% water changes... My SPS tanks get most of my attention, but only out of necessity... ;)

Hi there!

I love the look of larger colonies. Especially when they grow next to each other and their colors clash.

Here's some pics of an old set-up I used to have. Sadly most of these zoos are no more.....long story!!!!! Glad I took loads of pics of them though!
