Large Polyp Dave's Rimless SPS tank

Okay it's more of a mixed reef than an SPS exclusive tank, but I love SPS more than anything else! =)

I took some recent photos from my aquarium and I wanted to share with the community that I have learned SO much from

It was setup in Spring 2006
Rimless tanks weren't very common/popular back then. I wasn't sure how safe the tank would be without any bracing so I got the tank made with stupidly thick glass. (3/4").

SunnyX: I dunno if you'll stumble upon my thread, but I found it amazing that your new setup was so similar to mine. I was always a HUGE admirer of your old tank and I hope your current setup brings you even more success! =)

Tank dimensions: 48 long x 21 width x 18 tall
Skimmed with a Deltec AP 851
Constellation 7 T5 bulb setup
Bare bottom

I do have some kind of algae problem I've been battling over the years. It's a black fuzzy algae that grows on my rock that can be picked/brushed off. I've tried various types of snails, tangs, sea hares. And for some reason I can't get rid of it. You can see some of it growing in the photo of my bird's nest. I have no idea what is causing it =/

I've never had the space for a refugium in my setup but I've gotten desperate so I moved stuff around in the sump and now have chaeto growing in there. I'll see how it does over the course of the spring/summer in battle against this black algae.

Wow that's beautiful. I like the contrast you've created having a mixed reef. Best of both worlds. Do you have any equipment details?

Beautiful tank!

Not to spoil your hopes, but I've got that same black algae, and although my chaeto is very healthy, so is the black stuff.

very nice! Your tank looks clean and your pic quality is awesome. I love the color of the pink milli. can you tell us a little more about your tank. like what you feed your tank and what kind of maintenance you do to it, bulb combo?

Very nice tank!!! I loike the look of the clean back wall. I just set up a new tank and I am going to try and keep it black too. Any suggestion on doing so?

Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.

I am impressed, more info is needed about the equipment, bulbs, and any other specifics. People will start to get restless without these stats :) .

wow! I really appreciate the compliments!!

fish4me2: so you have that same black algae? did you ever figure out what kind of algae it is? is it even a real algae? or is it a strain of cyano?

i keep my back glass clean just with a razorblade. I have to scrape it once every month or so. I'm a big fan of black backgrounds.

I dose 2 part. I've used calcium reactors and kalk reactors on this tank and I could never get the stability that I've been able to achieve with a 2 part auto doser. I forget the company that makes the doser, I think it's aqua medic.

T5 Bulbs, I've tried pretty much every bulb on the market over the years, but I currently use:
2 aquascience 22k (blue)
3 aquascience 14k (white)
2 ati white bulbs
(5 white bulbs, 2 blue bulbs)

I've tried various "pink" bulbs but I find that they increase algae growth a little

I'll be sure to take more photos this coming weekend! Thanks for the kind words
