Large tank guys I need your help! Fish room questions...

I have a suggestion. Just go up there during the construction phase often, and talk to the actual framers and electricians. Honestly, if a pretty girl came on the site we usually appreciated the distraction. I think you could get a few things added quite easily, at cost or free, depending on how many times you smiled. ;)

And I'm being serious. I know what it sounds like, but the truth is it'll work. I was in construction for years, from framing to trim carpentry, and remodels as well. Use your edge, and you won't have to blow all that cash on rediculous upgrades. Running that extra circuit while the house is merely studs will take no time at all and the cost of wiring is nothing. It sounds like electricity is already covered, but getting that ductwork run will need the cooperation of the framer (to leave a large enough opening in the ceiling area over the basement). They can do it and it won't be a big deal.

Matter of fact, if your boyfriend is handy, you both could do some of this stuff yourself once the crews leave. I know several home owners that helped work on some things with our crews on site, and sometimes they came when we were off-site. We just worked around each other, and tried not to get the other 'side' angry. hehe

LoL =) Are you telling me to be flirty Marc? :P Yea, I can do that!

We had thought about going up there and doing a few things like adding a piece of wood where the tv will be mounted and such. Not sure how much we could get done, they have so many houses being built there's always someone around.

This is another one of those issues where I personally would not pay a builder to add. I would hire an electrician, if I were reluctant to tackle the project myself, after moving in. The cost might not be a lot less, but it will be less and it will be dirt cheap after the calculations are done on what that $300.00 circuit costs when paid for over thirty years... ;)

Yea, I agree with the interest. We are putting down 50% in cash to help with that.. but it still does add up over the long time.

Any idea how hard it is to put in a circuit? I'm worried about burning the new house down!

Instead of a circuit or 2, you might consider a subpanel in the fish room to be. Then you can add circuits from there as you need. They put one in my house (while under consturction) for $400.

What is a sub panel? Is that like a small electric box?

A sub-panel is just another breaker box that receives it's electricity from the main breaker box. You can run 1 wire from main panel to sub-panel and then put additional breakers (circuits) in the sub-panel.

For example. My sub-panel is fed by 40 Amps of breakers in the main. I added 5 circuits to the sub-panel to feed just the fish room and a couple of others for use elsewhere.

It will be the same amount of labor running the sub-panel feed. There will be more cost in parts. $300 for a circuit vs $400 for a sub-panel.

Yep. That's pretty much what I'm suggesting. Just dress like your avatar. ;)

And if you just show up on the site often, you'll get done what you want. You could bribe the crew with an ice chest full of cold ones, for example.

Remember, it is YOUR house. They (the contractor/builder) may not want you there because you can comewhat circumvent their billing, but if you are honest and explain what you are trying to do, I think the crew will work with you. Once all that stuff is in place, the sheetrockers will work right around any outlets, plugs, vents, etc. Those guys work fast and do it all the time so it won't be a big deal for them as they work their way through the entire home.

Let 'em paint the walls if you like with some quality paint, or do that yourself if you have to. There is no reason for you to have a 'raw' room once you are moving in.

Are you getting a floor drain? Stained concrete perhaps?

Thanks. But then wouldn't i still have to pay for a circuit to be added to the sub panel?

Haha! Your so shameless :P

No drain, I didn't want one. Yes I know what you're going to say!

Thanks for the tips. It will be quite some time before the house is built.. and not sure I'm going to wear a tank top in December to save $300! :P

One thing to think about when going behind the builder's back on adding stuff, is that depending on the city it is in it will be inspected according to the submitted plans for the permit. Also the main contractor for the job will notice all this extra stuff that is to be added and know it is not per the plans.
It may get by depending on how things are run but I really don't think you will get away with it. Now you may be able to use some of that "flirting" to get phone numbers for some good deals on work after you close on the house.

haha! I'm not really going to do that I was just joking. I'd be way too shy to even try that!

That's a good point thought about it not passing inspection. Ahhh!

Thank you!

yeah I ran a bunch of low votage ( Ethernet, Voice, Speaker, and COAX) to both sides of every room in my house then got a new GC and he wanted to cut all my wires. The ba$t@d was just a PITA ..ANyway I spoke with the Vice President of the company and was lucky they just put sheet rock over everything. No cut wires.

Yeah if they will let you run some wires for surrond sound in the rooms you want. I did it in my living room and bedroom. No wires going across the floor.

Not sure if someone said this Nanogurl, but when you said Duck the word you were looking for was duct. The tape is Duck tape, it was originally for waterproofing things (Is a ducks *** water tight?) during WWII and later contractors in the expanding HVAC market found out that it worked for sealing air leaks in duct work.

You can even talk to ducks? Is there anything that you can't do? Sheesh how many gifts can one person have? This is so frustrating . . .:rolleye1:

dsandfort -

If you decide to add a sub panel to the fish room, are there panels that are designed to deal with some moisture better than others?

lol.... well his answer wasn't what I expected at all! How rude!?!?!
I'm sorry, didn't mean to come off sounding rude, the duck *** comment was intended for color, not to belittle. The knowledge is relatively obscure and most people incorrectly call the tape duct tape thinking that it was invented for Duct work.
