Large tank project Advice

Hmmm Pete, seems you're lacking on the updates; no fear I have the shots from last month. Anyone interested, here are some photos from March 07.

Thanks for posting the pic's Ed. The monster skimmer should be in next week so you will have to come over and shoot some pics of the beast.

Green with envy. Very nicely done. Look forward to seeing the mechanical guts of the operation. The tank looks fantastic. Guess your well past the advice stage now so hope you'll keep posting.

Actually its much bigger than that. I would say it's between 18 and 22" long by 8 to 10 inches wide.

I recently acquired it from SMILLER as he is moving to Mexico and had to break down his tank.

You can see the same specimen several years back when his tank was TOTM here on Reefcentral.

how big is that yellow leather, looks like size of a football

In that first picture I posted for Pete, you'll notice a snail on the right side; as with everything in Pete's tank it's huge, pretty close to the size of a racquetball and definitely bigger than a golf ball. I hope that gives you a better size perspective.

I must ask what are these fishs and where did you get them? Their really cool looking :)

Red spot cardinals in the trade. Ask your LFS to order them from Sea Dwelling Creatures. Notice one of the males in the pic is brooding eggs.

They spawned a few times within the first 3 or 4 months I had them but seem to have slowed down since.

Thanks alot men I try and see if my local fish store can order me some :) You have an awesome tank keep up the great work and have an Awesome weekend :D

Steve,
This one doesn't show your leather as well, but I like the picture better because of the RBTA. It started as a small clone that George sent me and is now several much larger specimens in Pete's tank.

And Page 8 belongs to me! :D

So I bit the bullet and had Spazz build me a 18" diamter by about 6 ft total heigth skimmer.

I am still tweeking the dart and alita air pump. Spazz is sending me a new needle wheel to try out. The bubble size is much improved after I added a jg ball valve to bleed off some of the air and this also reduced turbulance.

The only concern I have left is sheer volume of bubbles. Make no mistake I think this skimmer will be a workhorse in the end but being a perfectonist I want the bubble collumn to achieve bubbleking type "white out".

The bubble collumn is a bit on the grey side and I think it can handle even more air if the bubbles are small enough to avoid excessive turbulance in the neck.

It isn't broken in yet. I have only had it running continuously for 2 days or so.

The first 24 hours made a couple of cups of very putrid smelling swill. Others running the same skimmer are getting a gallon a day or so.

It will be interesting to see how things play out over the next week or so.

One thing that did impress me today was when I fed a nice helping of cyclopeez and let the skimmer continue to run. It extracted a very large percentage of what went into the skimmer in rapid fashion.

It built up well over a cup of skimmate that was fairly dark in color within literally 3 to 5 minutes.

I think it will skim like a madman eventually but like I said, I won't be completely happy until that bubble collumn looks like white pvc.

Once I get it to that point then I plan on adding a large school of anthias and give this beast a chance to prove it's worth.

Pete
