Largest Private Tank!!!

It may be the same Sun but think about the shape of the Earth, the resulting angle of incidence in relation to the position on the surface, not to mention that little tilt it seems to have on it's axis.

Just my 2 cents though,
Jacob

By far the sun is more intense near to the equator. I have burned my retena in Tahiti surfing and I grew up surfing in Hawaii.

We have pretty intense sun here but when you get closer to the equator it gets really intense.

I think the main factor is not the intensity of the sun for the pond but how deep the coral is and the water temp.

If I could find a suitable location to match the par level of a real reef then you could pretty much go as deep as real corals are. I like the look of a deep tank so if I was going to invest in such a large tank I would want it as deep as possible so the location/par of sun would be some pretty important issues for me.

JustJoe's tank is about the same size except longer and is using 18k of MH's ... can't wait to hear about the electricity bill OUCH!

That was at T.O.P. (Time Of Print) ;)

I'm now up to 22, 800 watts. And its not accurate to quote watts/ gallon, but I'm just about 1watt/ gallon. That is probably as far as I'll go with the lighting on this tank.

I could have easily gone with more lighting or less, all depends on the rockwork placement, etc.

The tank is getting small already with regard to the corals, so even 20K isn't enough!

Wow! I cant wait to hear about an upgrade, that would be awesome

Using sunlight here is fine. We have more sunny days than Cairns (where I collect my corals).
Guys here have been farming corals here for years in their backyards.
Temperature is the main issue to control. Some guys have even been utilising shade cloth over their prop tanks.
I am unsure of PAR readings though. We have plenty of corals growing off our beaches here, so I'm not at all worried about light.
In addition, I will be mountng a few 20K 400w lamps over the tank. These will be turned on for night viewing, or to increase overall colour aesthetics.
If the tank is not being viewed, it will receive only sunlight.

Water movement will be provided by 16 tunze streams (in rock covers), and I will also be trialling an oloid.

Cheers

Based on a quick surf on the web, turns out that Perth (where I am) is one of the sunniest cities in the world. :D
For more so than any tropical city.

I'm just thinking that coral farmers have there corals inches away from the surface. I dont know how you plan aqauscaping but I cant imigine you would squish all your corals to the top on a 5 foot tank.

One last thing in regards to the lighting commet
In the natural reef say 30 feet deep, the colours seen are not nearly what they are in the tank. And not just the corals. Take a big light diving with u and shine it at a fish and u will see the bright colours that we love.
I say if you can afford a mega thousand gallon tank than just pony up the bucks and light it well.

Like I said, lights will be used for our viwing pleasure, however for the rest of the day when we are working, only sunlight will be used.
