Layaway

Since technology changes things get better and better.

I would Just save your money then buy your tank and equipment at once... Maybe even shop craigslist for used.

as far as layaway you would need to talk to local stores i would assume.

Do this: ask your bank to do an automatic monthly withdrawal from your checking account into a new savings account. It disappears quietly and automatically, you don't see it, it doesn't burn a hole in your wallet, and over time, you end up paying cash for the desired item, which has no percentage paying service fees or credit card interest. Much better way to proceed.

Exactly what Sk82 said. From what I know of layaway, you pay for whatever item(s) you want little by little and the store KEEPS said item(s) until you fully pay for it. So there really is zero benefit to layaway other than knowing that your stuff is sitting in the backroom of the store. Get yourself the savings account. You'll even make money doing so.

But to answer your question, I haven't heard of any store Marine/Reef shop that offers layaway. Might be better off trying Walmart or something if you're really hell bent on it. Providing that what you're looking for, they carry.

You might be able to work something out with a local store. Your local club will help you pick one that is reliable. The local clubs have subforums toward the bottom of the main page.

I've been able to rig up a tank that I really enjoy on far less $ than most people spend, this hobby isn't as expensive as people make it seem. BUT... I would strongly advise that you set aside a couple hundred bucks for emergencies. Your tank rainy-day fund will be a big relief when the inevitable, unpredictable, crazy thing happens. Just mentioning that b/c when I used layaway it was cause I was paycheck to paycheck, and I didn't have room in the budget for surprises. In this hobby, surprises are guaranteed to happen.
Good luck!
