Total drag about your loss - I had a similar issue on a trip a few years ago with a broken heater.
The idea about the security cam is a good one though; I just got back from 8 days in Mexico and before I left I hooked up a harbor freight cheapo color camera to my security system and I was able to check it from my iPad (our room had internet access). It was really nice to be able to see that the lights were one, the pumps were running and the fish were swimming.
Thats a bummer for sure and a costly mistake.
When are you due to come back ?
Your going to break the tank down right ?
I'm off monday if you need help or if you tank sitter needs help starting the break down and get the smell out of the house and tank. Let me know
That way it will be all broken down washed and dry for your arrival home and the remainder can be put into a small tank for later use.
Sorry to hear that Sam. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. Also when you get things going in the right direction I will donate some corals to you!!
YOU ARE ALL AMAZING!! Here I was trying to share and instead you have all comforted me more than you know! I decided to cut my vacation a week short and head home. I started in Montana today and just pulled in to Page....879 miles on a sleepless night after hearing about my tank yesterday and a broken heart all day has made for a LONG sad day....but me and my kiddos arrived safe and only have 6 hours to go tomorrow----your kind and supportive replies have given me the lift I need to make it home and open my home door with my chin up.
The offers for any needed helping hands and a few frags to rebuild once I'm ready gave me tears....(I'm usually not "that sappy chic"...but today I am! You guys made my day as I read these notes!
I will certainly keep everyone up once I pull myself together and carry on towards a rebuild!!!

??? .*Wonder if home owners insurance would cover my losses? It was likely a storm or power surge. Based on the timers the power crashed about 7pm on Tuesday .... A friend just said there was a huge storm in the valley Tuesday night. Any thoughts...ever heard of someone successfully making a claim? A friend said I will likely be told I needed a special add-on for 'livestock'. Any one have any experience with this (I have a voicemail in to my insurance agent for her to hear Monday...LOL, if she can make it out thru my sobbing.)
Why does always happen while vacationing. I came home from vacation once to find my tank was dead due to a power outage that tripped my breaker on the tank. My neighbors were suppose to be checking on it but they decided to go out of town. I was lucky though and didn't loose anything. People don't realize how much time and money we put into our hobby. Good luck on the insurance end.
I had the same thing happen a couple years ago. A breaker tripped and the tank was without circulation for a couple days. I came home to a graveyard of corals and fish. I started back out slowly and now have a thriving reef again.
I added up all the amps that my pumps, lights, chiller, UV, protein skimmer.... pulled and found out that there was just too much on a single 15 amp breaker. After that I ran 2 dedicated 15 amp lines to my fish closet and haven't had a problem with power since.
Yes Captain--I think that is JUST what my gut is telling me to do too! (my brother is a general contractor and his phone is about to ring!)
So many positive thoughts and fabulous ideas shared on this thread--I'm excited to have another shot at the perfect tank (duh--no such thing, I've learned!)
Insurance shot me down. I escalated to the big boys, they shot me down too..."no living creature/coral is covered". Booooo! But moving on!
Pressure washing all live rock this weekend, removing sand and starting over!
Fresh Start thread may be brewing....
Calcium 380 (low). Ph 8.2. Nitrate 0. Phosphate .25. Kh 12. *BUT--(you knew it was coming....) Ammonia is a ripe 4+ (but what a gorgeous color green!!)
Oh Sammi......I am so sorry to read this. I know you had some nice coral and fish. When you are ready, let me know and I will supply you with some new frags.

Right now the tank is clear of all coral and fish (you'll still find a few bones, or "Fossils" as my kids are calling them). This weekend I'm going to remove all rock, scrub off any remaining tissue/slime/gunk. Removing all sand (my mom can hardly wait to add it to her compost pile). Cleaning the back wall and overflow box. I'll refill with all fresh RODI salt water and scape the rock.
My hold up today is to use sand or crushed coral?? My older tank was crushed coral...I loved it for the amazing pod life I could easily see thriving, but it was never as clean looking as I desired. My current tank has sand...I love it for the clean look and the way it changes with the water flow creating the sandy hills, but it never housed the pods we could see (I know they were thriving in my LR - I had a fat and happy mandrian!).
Sand or crushed coral my friends?!?!
Thanks again for the kind words and encouragement. I hope to be able to accept a few of the frags being offered - they will mean so much to me and my kiddos! They will all be named after you all
I don't forsee adding any coral or fish for quite some time...I want to do it slow and as right as possible. *just don't tell my 4 year old!!! He asks HOURLY, 'mom, when can we get a new fire shrimp?*
Sand. That's my vote. I like how it looks, my diggers like it, and it doesn't hold onto phosphates as much as crushed coral (see the links below for that).
