Leaving the hobby

Hugo,

Sorry to hear about this but after seeing the pics you sent recently I can understand why. I sent you an email. I'll be around if when you decide to get back into the hobby again if you want to replace some of your corals. Are you shutting down the monster in the garage also?

Dave

thank you

Hugo,

Sorry to see you go, I hope you will come back some day. what brand of salt have you been using?

Tropic marine for 8 years, you think the Salt was the problem?

It's hard to say, I've been using TM for many years as well, but I just switched, problem as you described, burning tip like alkalinity burn, tip melting, slowly STN colony to colonies.

I'm having the same problems also. At first I thought it was high alk. I have since lowered my alk and my sps are still stn very slowly. some sps are ok, some are just melting away . I'm also using TMP salt. Bought a new bucket couple weeks ago, alk tested at 5. Contacted tmp and they said they were going to send me a new bucket of salt. been a week now, still waiting on that bucket.

Are they using the same Tropic Marine salt? I got into the same this problem lately when I was using Tropic Marine salt. I think they change new formula to prevent sticking salt together.
Btw, sorry to hear you leaving Hugo... Hope you come back!

Wow sorry to hear compadre..............and have dif felt this way more than once. I hope to take a rest see you when you come back.

Sorry to see you go. But can't wait to see your tank when you come back. I had the same issue for most of last year and I could never figure it out either. Then someone mentioned chloramines in our tap water, so I checked the DPW and sure enought they switched from chlorine over to chloramines last year. A normal RODI system won't remove the chloramines and they don't show up on TDS. So I upgraded my rodi filters and did many, many water changes. Now everything seems to be fine again. If you are getting water from the LADWP then I bet its the chloramines.

My bucket was a new fomular one, I tested alk was 4.2ppm, at first I thought the salt particles were settled, I handed the rest bucket to my friend and he mixed the whole thing and it also measured 4.2ppm, 2 weeks later, his huge monticap(kept for year) rtn then stn then gone, his lps won't open, he also switched salt.

So how you check your water? Did you send water sample to a company? Can you explain me more about this

Hugo sorry to hear of your problems,if it is any consolation,it seems as if a lot of people are having issues, water or otherwise.I have lost 2 huge Monti caps in the past 2 months and the third is on its way.I have been checking parameters more than I ever did in the past. The problem in this hobby is bad stuff seems to happen very fast and to rectify it takes forever.I have been using D&D salt for quite a while now.I am not sure that we should blame the salt just yet....We all use different salt and the problem appears not to be isolated. As Socal is such a huge market would it not be possible to put some pressure on the salt manufacturers through their distributors like Marine Depot etc to check into this a little deeper,at least so that we can eliminate one possible cause at a time and scientifically get some answers.Just a thought.

Hey Hugo, sorry to see you go your tank has definitely been an inspiration throughout the years.
I also hope you figure out what's going on with your tank and maybe that will change your mind, BTW I agree that it may be the water.
