Leaving the hobby

I'd like to get more info on this. I just bought a 200g tmp bucket from marinedepot and was going to start mixing. I wonder if anyone else is having the same issues....

Hugo, sad to see you go also. your totm was my inspiration for sps & coral fiesta was my first frag swap! I'm sure you'll be back with a vengeance.

Shoot me your number, I'll drop by for a visit the next time I'm in the area.

Hugo, very sad to see you go and hopefully it will be only for a short while. I've always enjoyed bumping into you at the local hangouts and shows and talking reefing. When you get back in please don't hesitate to PM me for some starter frags.

Hugo, I did test everything and thought it was alk burn and such. I changed salt from DD to TM and nothing. Everyhting you are describing is exactly what I was dealing with. Yes, my caps were one of the 1st things to go. I'm not sure if there is a test for chloramines and if never sent a sample to get tested. I do know that after upgrading my rodi filters to the chloramine removal and doing many water changes things got better. Not overnight, but slowly. After about 3 months and miltiple monthly water changes I'm able to grow sps,lps again.
I know if would be nice if I have a test showing that it truely was chloramines, but I think the upgraded filter fixed the problem.

I've thought about going FOWLR many times. I seem to be finding myself wanting more and more fish as it is. Even a nice softy tank with a ton of fish sounds like less stress, less hassle, and more enjoyment. You hit the nail on the head... the other stuff is a grind.

Hugo...A job well done!! You have been an inspiration to me in the past years. Id like to wish you God speed and hope you'll be back soon!

Hey Hugo, long time man! How are you doing? I'm sorry to hear about your tank troubles. Anyway, what timing... I can't believe you're getting out of the hobby after all these years right when I start up my tank again. Good luck to you and hopefully you'll be back soon! Btw, I'm glad to see you're still running the website I built for you! ;)

I had the same issue with my tank crash. Monti's then acro's followed by some of the LPS. Strangely though my softie tank wasn't affected at all. Same water, I mix in a common container and do water changes at the same time.

Sorry to here you are taking a break Hugo.
I wish I could convience you to stay and fight through this issue.
I also use TMP but have not had any issues with it. When I start seeing problems with corals and all parameters seem to be good I change carbon in the RoDi unit and replace the carbon and GFO in the main system. I suspect you are probably dealing with chlorimines or residual heavy metals from the battery.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you or better yet make you change your mind and stay in the hobby.
You have always had an eye for the rare and unusual corals and I have many from your collection.
When you are ready I will Have frags for you to repopulate your reef.

Take care
Steve G
