LED moonlighting from autolumination

pretty cheap, but i would go with the 25 leds in one unit for 8.99

i see alot of picture with 2-3 maybe 4 units max?

can anyone provide pictures with a tank that uses a load of units for a pretty bright led effec?T

I wonder what it would take to get a good light over a 30 gal cube with LEDs. Anyone have ay idea the ratio of LEDS /W of PC or VHO light?

I had mine running with 2 - 3 bulb LED units on my 4' 75 gal. It was a bit to dark in spots. I added one more 3 LED and now it looks great, no blacked out areas. I have them spaced one foot in from the two front corners and one in the middle. I find that they cover an area of about 1'. So three on the four ft. tank works great.

I didn't want too much illumination, it is supposed to be night and just a glow of moonlight. My Torch, Hammer, Trumpet, zoo's all flouresce under the blue LED's. I'm real happy with the setup.
I'll see if I can get a pic to show.

If anyone is thinking of ordering these I would seriously consider the Special Shipping Options. I ordered some on Dec. 20th and I'm still waiting.

these look awesome. i wonder how many ppl are using these on 8' tanks and if so how many. thats going to be the hard part. finding the right amount i guess i will buy 4 and place them every 2'

any suggestions comments? or does this sound like a good plan

Read my previous post.

So I'd say 7 on an 8' tank.

i am doing 5 on a 6 foot tank.

I may well make some "L" shaped acrylic brackets to mount them from.... alternatively...I thought of threading the wire down the inside of some of the black flex tube to make adjustable mounts.

i installed my new moon lights this weekend...this is one of the best and cheapest modifications I've ever done to the tank. I purchased just two of the 3 led versions and they are wonderful. As mentioned in this thread, the 3 led has a wider dispersion angle (than the 8 led model) and are perfect. I guess there is shimmer, so the covers don't hinder that..

I also used 2 of the 3 light units on a 75g. There is a shimmer. It's really awesome and cheap. I had looked at other options, it was going to be about $60. I'm very pleased with what I did and it's difficult to imagine a better look.

Just tagging along, I just put a couple of the 3 LED units on my 29. Definately the best and cheapest mod ever!!:D :D

Don't you find that you have dark spots with only 2 on a 75? I had two and I added a third. The difference is remarkable. I find that one 3 LED light per foot is appropriate.

On a 4' tank you would place one at 1' from each end then one in the middle at 2'. No dark spots, looks fantastic.

The only real shadow/dark area I've got is directly under a brace that crosses in the center of the tank. I don't want to put a light on the underside of the brace (it would be in the water) so I've felt that it's just going to be that way. It's not large and doesn't look unnatural (there are now hard shadow lines).

I could imagine that I might mount the lights I've got differently and reduce the shadow. These LED's are mounted about 10" off the water just outboard of the center of the tank. They're on a short 2x3 that is cut at a 30 degree angle to horizontal so they're not pointed straight down into the water.

Bottom line is that I know that I could mess with the installation a little more to reduce the little shadow but I don't find it bothersome and have been very pleased.

Cool. I've got a 75 acrylic so my center brace is clear. It also has bracing going around the entire perimeter of the tank (about 4" wide). So I have mine mounted at the front of the tank about 4" above the water.

No question this is one of the best non-essential additions to a tank and it requires just the tiniest of skills and knowlege. How cool is that!!!

Here are a few shots from my setup:

Sorry bout the large pic size. I used a 15s exposure to show what is an equivalent to my actual level of brightness.

Looking at these....my tank is a lot brighter than these look.

oh...I forgot, One of the guys in our club came up with a nifty idea for variable mounts on these units and has been making them for our club. I think he charges about $8.00. Heres a pic:

with these brackets added, its a great DIY project.

Next month we are doing a bulk order of these for our club and having a "DIY" night to make a bunch of these for our tanks.

I wanted to thank all who have contibuted to this thread, you made it really easy to make these lights.

Paul.
