LED moonlighting from autolumination

So I just hooked up 2 of the 3 LED versions, and they are a little too bright with a standard 12v power supply. Anyone know if it's possible to take these apart so I can maybe disconnect one of the LEDs in each of them?

I guess the other option would be to run them at a lower voltage? ... will they run at 9v??

I'm using a power supply I got at Walmart for $6-$8. It has several different voltage settings for 12V and less. Lowering the voltage does dim the lights.

Just ordered one of the 3 Led versions.

How long did it take to get yours?

Kevin

They ship via USPS. Mine took 2-3 days.

I have been running mine at 9V with no ill effects after a month of 12 hour/day use. I think that it would be wise to use a lesser voltage source ( ie. 9 volts) to insure longer life. I guess I'll find out if/when they do burn out.

9v

I love these lights. The only problem I am having is getting them to stick in the inside of my hood. Is it because it is wood? Any suggestions? Thanks Corey

They do seem to have a problem sticking to wood. Use velcro. The Velcro Extreme brand works very, very well. Just cut it to the size you need. Sold at Home Depot and lots of stores I am sure.

Ok I was wondering about how many do you think I would need to light up a 100G tank? The tank is 60"x19"x20"? I was thinking of getting two and mounting them on the sides of the canopy I am building at a 45 degree angle. I have 4 Blue LEDS on my 55G that will be broken down after the 100G cycles so if I have a dead spot in the middle I could use these 4 LEDs. Any opinions on this? Thanks in advance.

Depends on how bright you want it to be. I have 5 of the 8 led models over a 55 gal and I love it, all the corals that have the capability glow like christmas lights under them.

Man that is a lot of moonlight on top of that 55. I want to have a nice blue color to the entire tank and light a good amount of my corals and such. I do not want it to be really bright just a nice soft blue. I think I might just go with 3 or 4 and then add the 4 LEDs I have to supplement the 3 3LED domes.

I just got 2 triple led lights today. However, I have a small question before I wire them. I got this all AC Adapter from a laptop. The output is 12V and 1.7A. Is this okay for me to use?

wow looks great guys ! i just got off that web site i think im going to do do 2 set 1 blue and 1 red on my 125 ill do the blue for now thanks for the info guys .

Anyone see their M16 setups? The miniature track-lights with 12 LED's built into a single reflector and lens housing? They are fully adjustable so you can aim them just about anywhere.

I'm having visions of those Japanese tanks with all that supplemental lighting to spotlight specific corals.

Might be interesting to try a bunch of those an a smaller tank to see what kind of colors you could get by mixing and matching bulbs.

Has anyone tried the white LEDs? I have white in my exising PC fixture, and it looks good. Do we know that the advertised 470nm wavelength for the blue LEDs is the right one and/or the best one?

Thanks,
freddie

If it is 12v DC it should be fine. However, if that is 12v AC then no, won't work without adding additional electronics to convert it. Easier to pick of a 5 buck transformer from Radio Shack

Best one? Depends on what definition you are applying that to? True moonlight simulation? Then no, because these lights are constant output and are unable to duplicate the constantly changing lunar cycle. These lights are, for the most part, an asthetics thing that make us happy.

whats the largest tank you guys are running these lights on i like them and im planning on putting them on my 300. figure ill get 8 lights and spread them every 2 feet or so but i was just wondering what the largest tank that has them is and how many are on the tank.

I guess my reference to the 470nm in my question was not enough of a definition... Obviously three LEDs do not mimick the moon's cycle. Does the light bouncing off the moon have a light wavelength of 470nm when it reaches Earth? Seems the blue in the pics posted here is a bit too blue and looks rather unnatural...

I have 2 of the 3 led's on my 75 for over a month now. When i check it with only the leds on the fish are still swimming around like it was the middle of the day. I don't see them resting much. Could this cause problems?
