Leemar Peninsula 280 Gallons Build Out Door Sump

greenhouse outdoor sump

greenhouse outdoor sump

Looks like a awesome start. Can you explain more about your greenhouse and your sump?

I don't like the sound that the sump makes(because there is a skimmer pump, bio-pellet reactor pump, calcium reactor pump and various other pumps, air bubbles and water flow will have some noise) , so decided to move the sump outside the house into a green house. The Greenhouse will have a solar fan to push the hot air outside, and the greenhouse's main purpose is to keep the sump from dust and pollution. The 300 gallon pond itself will be insulated with R-13 Insulation Foamboard and I'm relying on this to avoid temp fluctuation.

I'm depending on this insulation of the sump to help me minimize the temp fluctuation and not the greenhouse itself.

So today I'm Halfway through building my sump insulation. I will post some photos tomorrow.

after this I will monitor the temperature fluctuation for atleast 8 months with Neptune apex before introducing any life forms. At this point it is more like a feasibility study to test whether it is really possible to keep an outside sump without spending an arm and a leg for heating and cooling energy charges.
we will see.
thanks

Thanks for the updates BIG!

Are you gonna run any plants in the green house to? Garden veggies maybe? Tomatoes...

And just saying... More than just a little jealous. I have a 300g tank that is junk now. Had koi in it till squirrels ate my filter lines... Always wanted it as a salt tank, oh well.

I gotta say, I think this is cool project! Oh, and I love the look of your budding aquascape too, the huge rocks are VERY cool, and I've not seen anyone use that concept before.

I'll be watching this one!

finally someone likes my rock work

finally someone likes my rock work

Those giant rocks you have chosen are awesome!! Definately different and cant wait to see the systen up and running. The outside sump you are trying in the green house is also a very different aproach and I my self have always wanted to try an outdoor reef pond and one day will but your setup is kinda best of both cause if nothing will grow on ligt outside its still a giant sump (cant fit a 300 gal sump under most tanks)

Haha, I took them out of the tank as the other reviews made me re-think. It may be too big for the tank. So I'm planning on sculpting them and then bring them back inside the tank. To put it inside and to take it outside it took 3 people. The rocks are that heavy. Or I might place them in my sump pond. It will look awesome there. we will see what happens.

sump insulation

sump insulation

so I started the sump insulation. First, I'm insulating the bottom base and then the sides. so far I'm close to finishing the base.
I will post some photos.

the insulation is R-13 meaning it has a resistance value of 13. It is 2" thick polyso foamboard.

tomorrow I will finish the side and coat it with marine boat bottom paint. and then the sump goes inside this insulated box.
we will see how far it will get done tomorrow

well, worked hard today, so it is time for the double black:

sump will sit on this

sump will sit on this

so the sump will sit on this. After some painting and finishing and building side wall and sidewall insulation.

heat exchange

heat exchange

So that tank sits inside the house, meaning there is a heat exchange between the inside house temperature and the tank temperature. There is also a heat exchange between the insulated sump and the ambient greenhouse temperature.

So my objective is to minimize the sump-ambient(greenhouse temperature) heat exchange while increasing the house-tank heat exchange.

The end result I want: I mean the objective of this experiment is to achieve the tank temperature to be only one or two degrees more than the inside house temperature in the summer and only one or two degrees less than the inside house temperature without any cooling nor heating elements in the system.

If I don't achieve this, then I will add more insulation and modify more designs in the heat exchange aspect of this project.

I meant to say "only one or two degrees less than the inside house temperature during the winter,"

so the tolerance is plus two degrees in summer and minus two degrees in winter of whatever is the inside house temperature.

Well, I have a huge backyard and side yard and my next project is to build DIY huge greenhouse with redwood and Twinwall plexiglass. May be next year? but this sump greenhouse is dedicated purely to saltwater sump and other equipment for my saltwater tank. Nothing else will come inside it.

I live in San Jose

dang where do you live that has a huge backyard?!

I live in evergreen area San Jose. Just got lucky and we were looking for a house that had HUGE Backyard and side yard. That was one of my criteria. we found one and bought it. I set up a playground for my daughter and she loves it. I'm building things around the house like there is no tomorrow. Great to have large space in bay area man.

Huge

Huge

I like everything huge. I love cooking and even when I cook for an army although it is just for my wife and my one yr old daughter. I like to do things huge. I know it is always not that good. Ended up spending huge money for rocks and they are literally huge for my tank. lol
I think I have a psychological problem about "huge."
Well I decided to build another frag tank next year with 96" x 36" x 12" with one inch acrylic and I will post photos of it.
will start that project soon though, and I know it may take me a yr or more and I will place my huge rocks there and it will look awesome there.

Hey maddhugan, nice setup tagging alone, what type of tank this will be SPS, or mix ? Like the art design on the side of the stand
