Lens choice for Canon 40d

Ok so I am toying with the idea of getting a new lens for my 40D and I cannot spend the cash right now on a Canon 24-70 that everyone raves about. Just not happy with the stock lens for tank shots though I am sure a little of my displeasure is caused by my lack of "skill". So was curious if either of these two are worth looking into in your opinion?

The choices
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Aspherical
or
Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical

I have no first hand experience with either of those lenses. Both appear to have decent reviews. If I had to choose, especially with a crop body camera, I'd choose the Sigma just because it's wider.

One of the things that I absolutely hated about my 28-135 was that it just wasn't wide enough.
