Yeah I agree with jthao all the way. I think everyone should at least know the bare foundation before they buy a DSLR. It's like buying a 125 gallon reef tank without knowing what a sump or protein skimmer is, much less how to use them efficiently. Too late for that though. Now that you have a DLSR, read your owners manual front to back like jthao suggested. 1:1 is referring to the actual image produced on the sensor itself.
 
I actually read my owners manual front to back 3 times. and still go back to it for info.
Also I've read many books/articals about aperture, shutter speeds, dof, white balance, etc, etc. and honestly, it doesn't help until you actually go out and play with the camera over and over again.
I have a nikon D80 also so I love it. to answer your original question:
a "true" macro lense is so much different than a lense that claims to have macro option. I've tried both and only after using a real macro, I really saw the difference. check out the different macro lenses for the nikon, and depending on budget you can decide which one to get.
