Leonardo's Formosa Forest 2

Your Dsb substrate does not look like very fine grain. Lots people say it must be very fine grain for a dsb to work. Sorry for the stupid question.

Your dsb doest not like very fine sand right. I also want to add a similar dsb into my sump but I dont have very fine substrate, will it work?

Thanks Nugz, Greg and Kenny!! :)

Looking good Leonardo!

How deep is the sand in the RDSB?

I am just trying to picture this! The 8 gallon glass container will go in the sump and the sump water will just flow over the container?

Do you feel you may have any concerns with hydrogen sulfied or any other forms of gasses building up in that deep of a sand bed?

Looks very interesting I may do the same for my tank.

Thanks

Kevin

Thanks Kevin, the RDSB is 6" deep. It will be placed in the sump, after the skimmer. Laminar flow will prevent buildup of detritus in the RDSB. I've had a RDSB in my previous tank and didn't notice any HS. (for two years)
If I do smell something, I can easily take out the RDSB before problems develop :)

This is very fine Oolitic Aragonite sand, although the macro is a bit misleading.
If the substrate is finer, less oxygen can penetrate into the sand bed and a larger anoxic area can develop. This means the RDSB will be more effective in reducing Nitrates.
Besides that less detritus particles can sink into the sandbed, preventing a buildup of nutrients.

Where's some new pictures?

I hope the pictures on the previous page are enough for now ;)

I had some bad luck today. The whole tank room had a short-circuit burned smell, and one of my Lumatek ballast wasn't firing the MH anymore.
I'm not sure what happened. They are on a dry, well ventilated spot so I think something went wrong in the production/assembly. These ballasts have a three year warranty so I hope the German online store where I ordered it will arrange something.

-------------------

I'm really hesitating to transfer the corals, because I'm not sure the tank has cycled enough already. Parameters are spot on (although Nitrates 1-2 ppm), did a 80% water change yesterday.
Keep in mind that the tank was filled with fresh rock and I have no additional skimmer for the tank. Two weeks of cycling in a dark container and one week in the tank. There has been constantly filtered with large amounts of GAC and GFO.
I think I will wait until after the weekend and let the snails and urchins do their thing with the rocks in the meantime. What do you guys suggest?

Even thought I can't wait to see this tank filled, I'd say take your time, it would suck if you would lose the corals in the last moment after all the time spend on QT etc.
Maybe move some of the hardier coral's over to see how they react and move over the rest next week?

Sorry to hear about the trouble hopefully you have a back up...who knows how long it will take them to repair or replace it. As far as the transfer I'm with flying_duchman. Better to wait and be sure than risk the corals. As hard as it is we'll all just have to wait a little bit longer.

I can't wait to see the progress with this, and to scope out what the rock layout will be - less is often more :)

Really looking forward to your transfer and break-in to be done - as I'm sure you are too.

Dan, I don't have a backup... But I ordered a new ballast immediately so that one will be delivered within a few days. When I receive a new one out of the warranty that will serve as back-up.
I will wait with the transfer of the corals until after the weekend. This also give me some extra time to move some rocks ;)

CR, you're right. I can't wait :) Welcome to RC!

Very nice looking tank Leonardo.

You use refugium and RDSB instread of carbon source right?

How about reef-actif? Do you still use this?

I am looking forward to next progress~!!!

Thank you. I decided not to use a refugium, only a RDSB and BB husbandry.
This means no substrate, very strong flow, strong light with good spread and Kalkwasser and 2-part to maintain parameters.
With strong feeding/skimming I can control the nutrient levels easily.
Over the years this simple approach gave me the best results in growth and color.
Maybe I will use Reef Actif again in the future but I'm not sure if I will use any additives besides some trace elements (Iodine, strontium etc.)

Nice to see progress being made! cant wait to see it all transfered. I've thought about adding a similar rdsb myself ever since i saw it in your first LFF but my current sump is too small...

Good enough reason to upgrade the sump i guess. :)

Sorry about the ballast - If the company doesn't stand behind their product I would be surprised. On transferring the corals - my suggestion is to wait. I got in a hurry and moved mine too soon, and I've lost a couple. The rest are very upset with me, but hopefully we won't lose any more. Not that our stock was anywhere near as nice as yours...
