Leonardo's Formosa Forest

trueblackpercula; I added the RDSB because others had good experiences with it regarding to pale corals. I decided to give it a try and I think it contributed to the colors I have now.
Besides that the RDSB made me feel sure to feed a lot more without raising NO3 too much. I think that helped a lot for the colors also ;)

ReefWaters; Thank you!! Bommie... I know, it is a strange word. I once saw it in a diving-magazine. It referred to small coral-island. The new 250 will have the same style so I hope you will like it too :)

Chrisrush; I'm making progress collecting all the equipment for the tank.
It's going a bit slow because I'm graduating in the and of April, besides that I'm taking things slow. I want this tank to be well planned and thought out. After my graduation I'll have more progress and I will start a thread here for sure! :)

Hi Leonardo, here's another picture of Mr Morita's beautiful aquarium, taken from the magazine that invincible posted.
In case you did'nt know he does 120% waterchange every 2 weeks and uses no skimmer or Ca reactor.
All the best with the new 250, using Mr Morita as an inspiration is a good start :)

in case anyone is actually confused, i'm sure he means 60% per week, which is roughly 9% per day. with no skimmer or reactor, i could see how this might be required (and work).
 
It's easy, you just upgrade to a 20% larger tank with every water change. With just a few months of 120% water changes your tank will look incredible!

I was told by someone who has seen the tank in person and knows the owner.
First 100% is changed then the following day a further 20%, and this routine is done every fortnight.
 
So, how would a tank, relating to to excess nuisance nutrients and lack of beneficial elements, benefit from that extra 20% exchange of basically newly introduced water?
 
i could see 9% per day, but this is just weird.

maybe it was superstition!

or maybe the 100% water changed caused all the corals to slime out (almost like a low tide) and as a result he did the 20% change to clear some of the slime...

I was always under the assumption that water changes should never exceed 50%, and this should only be done in extreme situations. I was guessing that small water chages are done daily thereby equalling 100% every 2 weeks. Does anyone know what salt this guy uses? Having this much faith in one brand of salt I would definetly look into switching to his brand of salt. It always amazes me when people are having great succes with out of the box technique.
Does anyone have a link to his tank?

This is an awsome tank. I also would like to see a thread about his tank. I can't tell from the picture but alot of his corals seem dull compared to other ways of mantaining reef tanks. This could be a poor quality picture, but never the less still an inspirational tank. Does this guy use additives inbetween water changes to keep up with calcium demand like Drip kalk?
 
Definitely TOTM for me that is. It's originality and stock choices just appeal to me more than the usual TOTM. The new tanks is gonna rock :)

What do you use to trim your corals? Does it help to promote growth, or do you do to get the corals to fill out more?

Tritonian; Thanks! I trim my corals as less as possible, I want them to fully grow out. Only when they start touching the glass -or each other- I will trim them. In my new tank they will have all room to grow :)

Very sweet setup Leonardo...........the growth on those guys are amazing! I have a quick question about your pendant mod. Did you have to pre-fabricate/cut and bend all the mounting brackets/plates for the T5's yourself? Any chance of a pic of the underside of the fixture? Very creative mod...........I likey :D!
