Leopard Wrasse Question

Hey I have a question to all the leopard wrasse experts out there on this forum! :lol2: I will be getting two blue star leopard wrasse's both the same sex(I think female) that are sub adults. My questions are, will one of them morph to a male once they get comfortable in my 75g? Also will they fight since they are the same sex? I would like these two leopards to become a pair. Thanks! I appreciate it!
 
Buddy of mine had a trio of Bipartitus, all females, and they were awesome. One turned into a male after about 3 months if memory serves. He lost the whole tank in one of our many week long power outages.

I just picked up my first Leopard, a Meleagris. I think the Bipartitus are nicer looking and more social. They don't ship/acclimate well though so good luck.
 
Thanks for the info! That gave me more hope that they wont fight and hopefully one of them morphs! I just hope shipment wont stress them out too much and that they will survive in my tank! Im ordering from New York so shipment shouldnt be too bad for them.
 
Just be prepared to have them with their day/night backwards. They will probably dive into the sand and not reappear for a few days. Also be ready with a variety of foods. My new leopard ignores everything except frozen Mysid. My friends leopards would only eat cyclopease for the first few weeks. Leopards are easily bullied, particularly by other wrasses, so be ready to separate them. Sorry you asked yet ..... :)
 
I do have alot of pods! I also have a yellow wrasse thats very peaceful! I do have a mean purple dottyback but only bullies fish smaller than him, impossible to catch too.
 
So I got 2 female Blue Star Leopards sub adults Wednesday morning from Nyaquatics. They went into the sand bed as soon as they entered the tank and I havent seen them since. I know this is normal but when should I be concerned? I've also been checking at 1 and 2 am to see if they come out but I havent seen them yet. Im just worried that they will starve themselves hiding in the sand or died in the sand :(
 
I would not be unduly concerned yet. My Leopard dove into the sand for two days and then emerged on day three at about 5 pm. It has been coming out daily about 30 mins. earlier each day. Appeared today at about 2 pm. At this rate it will end up taking about three weeks to get it on US East Coast time.

Probably wise to have some live brine on hand just in case. Mine took thawed mysid right away, but not sure if that is typical behavior or not.
 
Oh wow nice! I will keep the live brine in mind! Mike from Nyaquatics said the leopards have been eating mysis 3 weeks he's had them. So I think they will eat mysis when I feed them, just got to wait to see them come out first! :D
 
If you look around you will see there mouths sticking out of the sand also mine took three weeks to fully come out but two weeks before I seem it swimming in my tank checking all hours till one day it came out when I was feeding the tank I also read a lot that its a bad sign if you see them within the first week also do not go digging for them very bad and wish you luck love my male leapard
 
Cool! You are sure i will see there mouths sticking out of the sand? I got to keep a close eye out now haha. That info is alot more comforting now that you told me your leopard took 3 weeks! All i have is my sand siftig goby sifting the sand around. Thanks for the information! Maybe ill see them next week hopefully!
 
Dont go searching you'll stress them out and that will be the end. You should dose prazi ASAP since they often have internal parasites that take them out fast even if they are eating good. Prazi can fix that. Throw every food you can think of at them but dont pollute the tank either. I got a couple started eating live black worms right off the bat but that was before I learned about how prazi should be done asap. live bw's can be had at the all-pets club in wallingford, not that I would suggest anything else from there.

everytime I buy a Predator wrasse, almost every sand dwelling species, poff they're gone for my minimum of 5 days. make sure you take the advice and don't go hunting for them. most don't come out at night. all mine dive into the sand around the same time when the lights go to blue. early morning when the Sun comes up is the best time to spot these predators.
 
Wow! I just saw one of them come out! around 11:45am! She just swam around her corner and every fish came to check her out. There might have been a little aggression from my yellow wrasse and dottyback that might not have seen but she was just checking her area and looking at the glass for a little bit. Didnt get a chance to feed her since she went right back into the sand! I still have one more that im waiting for to come out! Triggreef will Prazi effect anything else other than the Wrasses? Or negatively? Thanks everyone for your advice and experience on these guys! One more leopard to go!
 
Yes. It kills worms so feather dusters & ornamental worms... What people dont think of is if you have a lot of live rock, you probly have a lot of bristle worms, sand dwelling worms, spaghetti worms, and countless other types you might not know of. That could cause a potential ammonia spike.

Which is why I use a quarantine. One with a bunch of fake LR & loaded with pods.
 
So the same leopard came out again at 8:10am this morning and stayed out longer than the day before. She is out looking around checking her surrounding in the front of the tank. She is also getting a little bullied by the flame angel and the purple dotty back. The lights are still off and I put some mysis in to see if she was hungry but she didnt go for it. She looked more interested in looking around. Should I go out and get other foods just in case? Or try again later if she is still out with the lights on?

That doesn't really make any sense to me, and has not been my experience with the half dozen or so of the sand diving wrasses I have kept. It would seem to me that these fish would emerge from the sand when they start to feel more comfortable with their new environment - and the sooner that happens the better IMO and IME.
