I don't see many people talk about leptastrea... does anyone have some in their tank? I've been eyeing a good-sized violet frag at the LFS and wondering what people's experiences are with it - good, bad, or indifferent.
I have a green one and a blue one growing in my tank. I have noticed the blue grows faster than the green in my system and they are both growing in a lower flow/light environment (bottom of a API 6X54W). The blue even invaded red mushroom territory but the mushrooms did have a detrimental affect on the new polyps until I took those mushrooms out (I prefer the leptastrea). Once the shrooms were removed the blue leptastrea grew right back in the spots that were killed. Going back to flow, the green ones new growth is faced in the direction of the flow so I am sure it will grow faster in medium flow but the blue grows in all directions.
I've had a pretty "typical" looking orange piece for about 8 months. It's been very slow to encrust. Recently, I saw a piece at a LFS that had huge polyps..easily 3 times the size of a normal colony. Pretty cool!
I just took some pics from my cell phone. It will not be the best quality though but gives you an idea on growth for the leptastrea. Didn't want to bring out the 7D since I am acclimating a blue squamosa at the moment.
As you can see in the pics the blue leptastrea is growing very well with the exception where the red shrooms are. There were more shrooms but I took them out so the blue leptastrea has room to grow.
The green is in the same area but is growing only toward the area of flow while the blue doesn't care. In my opinion the pics definitely does not justice to them and when people see my tank they notice the LPS and how nice it encrusts onto the live rock. I have even noticed the blue enjoys cyclops and devours them fast. The green eats cyclops as well but not with the same vigor as the blue.
Leptastrea! I have a small frag of the green and I could never remember what it was called. LOL. I've had it for a few months and it just doesn't seem to grow. It looks just as good as it did when I brought it home from the LFS so my water must not be too bad. I'll be moving into a larger tank in a week or so, after that settles in I'll pay very close attention to my parameters 'cause I want this stuff to grow...it's very cool!
I have an orange, a green and a "golden coin" from pacific east. They are slow growers. I've had the orange one for about 6 months and it hasnt done much but still looks healthy and vibrant. I actually feed it a couple pellets once in a while and it seems to like it and sucks them right in.
This is a truly terrible and dull picture, but it looks neon orange under actinic. Its at the bottom cut off:
Leptastrea are great corals. Very hardy, long lived, can take medium to lower light/flow, grow well when fed...
Here's a 'Golden' morph I've cut in half once and is now about the size of a golf ball:
This 'regular' morph came from a reef that no longer exists (wiped out by a cement factory). The wild colony was the size of a football and I've had it since 2000. Here it is the size of a small plate in my old 50g:
...and today, after many, many fragings, in a 12g Nano:
I once gave a frag to another reefer who forgot it overnight in Revive...or Coral Rx. When he realized the next day he'd forgotten it, he thought it was surely a goner. But, a few hours later in the tank it had opened up like nothing had happened.
