Less than a year in Hobby

Hello everyone. I heard about this forum through gatorolsen. I live in Citrus County and I am a high school teacher. I am just looking to connect with other hobbyists locally. My tank has been going about 10 months. I have a 44 gallon corner tank with overflow with a 10 gallon sump. I have about a 2 inch SB and about 50 lbs of live rock. I have much to learn and I am battling red slime (cyanobacteria). I have upgraded the number of my cleaner crew and upgraded waterflow. I have also reduced my photo period to about 5 hours(Currnt 24" light bar with 250 MH, temp is roughly 79.3 F). Gatorolsen is going to allow toto try a UV sterilizer she has. Any other suggestions?

Don't limit your posting to specific reef club forums--be sure to post on the new to the reef forum, reef discussion forms. reef chemistry forms ect etc. Just a greater exposure then some of the smaller reef club sites

besides low flow cynano bacteria is fueled by nitrates and phosphates
Here is a thread with tips on limiting nitrates and phosphates
It is based on fighting algae but it is very similar for fighting cyano

:lol: oops I hope I didn't hit a nerve here--never meant to downplay the role of local aquarium clubs.
I wish I had one in this area

Reply #2: Steve, unfortunately I feel too many. First of all, I have taken on a few that were given to me from people who didn't want them any more. Secondly, I have three daughters who really like to fish. I have 2 True Percula, 2 Ocellaris, Royal Gramma Basslet, Spotted Manderin, Blue Tang.

The blue tang is the fish I would do with out. It well get big and has a Minimum Tank Size: 70 gallons some say more.

How big is your blue tang? And what kind? Hippo or Atlantic.

I have had success getting rid of red slime by turning off the lights for 3 days. Keep them completely off, and then after 3 days return to your normal light cycle. Your corals will be fine without light for 3 days. Just think in nature there have surely been 3 cloudy days in a row over every reef.

And dont mind ted, he is definitly our old foot.

falconcass I work in Inverness almost everyday, so if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask. I have only been in this group a short time, and i will tell you that they ( I guess now we is more appropriate) are all there for you. Being new to the hobby you are in the right place. Reef central got me through alot of hard times in the beginning, and continues to be a wealth of information. What kind of teacher are you? not English I hope? LOL (you will find we are pretty laid back here, and most of us are smarta$$es)

I really appreciate all the feedback. It is really nice to be able to connect with all of you. I will definately try the 3 day lights out trick. The tang is about 2" long, I'm pretty sure it's a hippo. I currently teach physical science to freshman at Citrus High School. I am somewhat used to sarcasm and I can dish a little of my own out, so this should be a good fit for me. Thanks for all the advice!
