I'm not to sure on the paly/proto id but most of the places that I have seen on the net refer to the PE type as paly.Now are they right :confused:. Mabe someone here with more experience about ID zoas and paly's can chime in.I would like to know myself.
 
the PE morph is definitely not a paly. it used to be called a protopaly, and yes there is a big difference b/w the two. recently, thats changed again, and i think its called zoanthid gigantus now. there is currently a thread going on about it right now in this forum

we have become pretty lose when it comes to species identification, b/c there really isnt that much scientific backing to the classifications, but in the end, its not really that big of a deal.
 
i call the ppe types protos for short i think its as easy to say as paly??who is the scientist who renamed these the new name???thanks for the link to that thread.
 
I know they're common, but I really like these ines with the brown skirts.

now, someone correct me if i'm wrong on this, but if you are referring to that big green polyp in the center.....for some reason, that resembles a majano, or some type of rock anenome to me. but that may be b/c of the blurry picture.

It looks like some of the same palys I have they are huge but mine don't have that much PE.I will see if I have a old pic.
 
its not an anenome at all. when they close up the outer is blueish with dark blue dots. It was collected by a marine biologist by hand 2 years ago. now i have 7 polys after he sold them to me from a local reef club. ill get an updated pic with more of them.

You might be right they do look to have multi rows skirts.It looks like the pic in the 3rd thread. Got to love the net all the info you need at a click.
 
the thing that always sticks out at me first with those rock anenomes, is if you look at the end of the tentacles, they have a white tip... it almost looks like there are *stars* at the very end of the tips. it just stands out in my mind before anything else.

sometimes you can also tell in relation to the zoas around them. usually the zoas will look half way closed up, in relation to where the anenome is, which means its getting stung.
 
ill try to get a better shot. It doesnt look anything like thos ones you showed me. The middle is bright green than fades into pink. And it only has 2 skirts. My cam sucks but ill try real hard to get a good shot with a few them in the pic.
