let the rebuild begin

Thanks for the info Jackson: Yeah I already priced out the DJ 8 and Amazon seems to have the best deal at $30.56. They also have a 4 outlet variety for those who might require less. I'm ordering the DJ 8 now. It appears this device it primarily marketed to DJs for plugging in their equipment. Leave it to reefers to find other applications.

By the way, its hard to see from the photo, but how did you mount it? However you did it it looks very cool. I have seen in the past that some mount it either in the door or the side of the tank stand so that the toggle plate is flush with the outside of the stand and therefore always visible and accessible. Plus it looks very tech.

I took a piece of scrap maple that I used to skin the stand and cut a hole in it to fit the switch panel. I screwed that piece of wood into the stand's 2x4s, then screwed the switch panel into the maple.

I wish I would have taken the time to measure it up a little more tightly so that it didn't hang down so low, but it's not a big deal.

i love the sand in there too,, great choice ! i wanted to go all black when i built my nano but didnt find any locally , where did you get it and what brand did you find?

I bought it online - Dr Foster & Smith. It's Caribsea brand, Instant Aquarium sand. It's a little coarser than I would like, but probably won't be an issue as I don't plan on having any sand sifting critters.

Folks should also be aware that the colored sands do not possess any pH buffering properties. It also probably does not have the same denitrification ability as would Aragamax or other finer (less coarse) oolithic substrates. That may or may not be an issue depending on other methods people use to insure pH stability and nitrate control. Having said that, it sure does look cool.

Bigger sump/fuge installed, new skimmer in, ato set. All I need now is some macro algae and a fuge light and I can finally be "hands off" for a while.

Fuge side is ~18x12x10.5... ~10g of water at normal operating depth.
Drain side is 5.5x12x12 and holds an SWC 120 cone skimmer.
A single baffle separates the two sides

haha. Well, Mine has no water in it, so pat yourself on the back for me! :)

I can't wait to see how the refuge works for ya- looks like you really used the space wisely and have lots of space to diffuse the microbubbles before return. *impressed*

I want a switchy thing- I hate my 1000 cords!

Looks great Jackson! How are you liking that skimmer? Your thread inspired me to purchased the DJ8 rack. Best $30 I ever spent. It is wonderful to be able to throw a switch to disable a pump , power head or whatever device. One question...What is the aqualifter on top of the skimmer for? Is that for an auto top-off system?

What is the load per channel on that switch getup? Can I run my 250w (more like 330 I think) metal halide, plus t5s, and pumps off of it?

Thx,
Angela

It's working well so far. As long as I keep the fuge water level 1-2" below the drain area, the flow of the water keeps all the bubbles right up against the baffle. If I raise the water level then they drift across the fuge, but stay at the surface... so far, no problems *knocks on wood*

Isn't that nice? No more digging through wires, reaching around equipment ot get to power strips... ahhhh, so much easier. So far the skimmer is great. It's noticeably more effective than my old HOB was, which hopefully will mean I can add another fish or two.

And yes, the aqualifter is for the ATO. I've got a bucket of fresh water around the corner that I'm using as my ATO resevoir.

Thanks, just ordered from Amazon. Oh, so excited to have all this on a switch- so so tired of unplugging! Thanks again for the inspiration:)

They are really handy. I went back and forth about whether or not I was going to get one... was $35 I didn't have to spend, project was getting expensive enough without it, but I was overhauling with the intent to do things "the right way"... so I ended up going with it. I'm so glad I did.

My only real complaint is that I wish it had a front auxillary outlet. I use a pump when doing water changes, so I still have to snake my arm through all my cords/equipment to get to the power strip at water change time. But that's kind of nit picky... and not what the switch panel was designed for.
