Let Them Flash!

Here is the first Mccoskers i got from this place a year ago. Unfortunately it only lasted 3 days. Like the one i just got the anal fin is really deep blood red color. I'm going to try and find out where my LFS are getting these wrasses from.

Tanaka, spoke to my LFS where i purchased the Mccosker and they told me it comes from Sri Lanka. Aparently they will be getting more in next week. Can only wait and see.

My LFS has a pair of McCosker in. Supposed to be male and female. The 'male" is twice the size of the "female" However the female is much more colorful. And here's the question; both have a single red filament. Do female flashers have filaments?

No, female has no filament in any species, and if it has it should be called a male. The size of male of mccoskeri ranges 4-8cm+.

Unfortunately it passed last night. My search continues, can't seem to find a healthy specimen of this variation of Mccosker

It hid most of the 7 days i had it, it did attempt to eat mysis but spit everything out. It took a couple of bites of pellets only.

Hopefully i don't have to wait another year to find one.......

Thought I'd add a couple pics of my McCosker's Flasher. A lucky find at a LFS. Didn't know what species it was when I bought it. I really didn't give flasher and fairy wrasses much thought, but now after this flasher and a Lubbock's fairy, I'm hooked.

Nice! I love the McCoskers! Mine is in quarantine being fed and fed and fed and fed.

He got really skinny and I got him out of the display and treated him with maracyn 1 and 2 and I have been stuffing him with food ever since. If anyone has any other suggestions I am all ears as I don't want to lose this guy.

Here is a blurry shot of our McCosker. He is kind of skinny still, is there anything in particular that they like to feed on that will fatten him up? He eats cyclop-eeze, pellets, and mysis. Also how much do they usually go for? We got ours for $20, is that a normal price?

That is not a normal price. They are usually $70 and up.

$70,- ? It is too expensive in Japan, and we can get each male at US$20-25, but specimens from Kenya require some 60,-.

Prices will depend on or change with its condition, size and locality of capture. You may choose more beautiful and healthier fish, probably not selecting by the price.

It is a male (8cm) Paracheilinus octotaenia. It cost some US80,- and was shipped to my home via Tokyo.

SDGuy, I bought the one from live aquaria, under the diver den section. $70 is more than I'll usually pay for fish, but I've had luck with them, and I've been looking for a nice small McCosker. It's a beautiful fish, ate like a pig the first day, and has settled in well. One question, would it be recommended to buy 2 female mccosker to add to the tank, or just males of other species? I'm more concerned about the well being of the fish, as opposed to just getting them to flash, so which would be preferable? Also, could I add fairy wrasses without concern?? Thanks,

I have similar questions since this is really my first venture into flasher/fairy wrasses. Hopefully someone with more experience can offer some answers

BTW, both my McCosker's and Lubbock's flash/display without any other wrasses in the tank. Soemtimes when I add food. Soemtimes when my dispar anthias gets fiesty.

i have 2 mccosker females with my male. He doesn't display much around them. But during feeding EVERY fairy/flasher i have displays. Very cool to watch. My flame male is king of the tank even though hes 3" or so, but the male rhomboid is a close second and hes 4".

most mccoskers and carpenters are lumped together and sold as carpenters (hence the cheap price) if a LFS or wholesaler takes the time to sort them out they usually charge more for mccoskers since they aren't from basically everywhere in the pacific. I believe mine are from africa. I paid 120 for the trio which i thought was a great price considering females are very hard to get.

H. Tanaka, do you have any pics of the females? i can't seem to get a good shot (fast fish combined with bad photography skills.. lol)

Tanaka, i went to my LFS looking to replace the Mccosker i just lost last week and found what they claim to be a Mccosker. I do not believe it is Mccosker because of the red dorsal spine. What do you think, it sure is a beauty and about 2.5 inches They told me it came from Vanuatu.
