Let Them Flash!

heuerfan,

It is not mccoskeri but rubricaudalis (Red-tailed Flasher). The former distributes only in the Indian Ocean and does not range Vanutau.

I will post a photo of mccoskeri in a female form soon.

Thanks Tanaka for the ID. My search continues for this variant of the mccosker....

But i am very happy to receive the Red Tail Flasher and look forward to posting pics of it.

Tanaka,

I noticed that some rubricaudalis have yellow anal fins, where mine is red. Will the red turn to yellow or is this just different variations of rubricaudalis?

Thanks,
Steven

Is the LFS a secret? LOL

Can only be a few stores if it's in manhattan. If you don't want to publish the store's name here, send me a PM with the info.

I know all of the stores in the city, just haven't been to them in a while. I want to know what store because you said you lost two fish that you bought. I'm just curious to see which store it is. I've bought fish at these LFS before and I've had my good and bad experiences.

If you could PM me with the store I would appreciate it, thanks.

Here is a better picture of my Redtail Flasher, was lucky to get this after taking a hundred shots :)

And a little video clip also....

Nice shot! My McCosker's been flashing for the last 15 minutes at his recently revealed reflection after cleaning the algae off the glass. This is the best I could do :(

Yes, it is unusual but the anal fin becomes red when it is exciting.
Your fish is distinct in having an anal fin that is divided into two areas. The fin is yellow basally, and grading to red in most cases.

See the Allen photo from Fiji below.

Here is a male from Vanuatu, 9cm long.
(upper) It has a yellow anal fin shading to reddish distally.
(lower) It is the same male in display. The fin turned red.

Anyway your fish is very interesting, but if it came from Vanuatu it is rubricaudalis.

If given ample space(150gallon) and rockwork can these fish exist with a Majestic Angel and PB Tang. I like the contrast of mixed fish sizes. I would add the larger fish after the wrasses. Thanks

kkris,

Yes, you can add larger fish species like Majestics or Powder Blue Tangs after acclimating Fairies & Flashers. The tank needs many crevices for them to hide when they feel that 'dangers' appoach.

Here's my new P. rubricaudalis from Vanuatu. It is very large for a flasher. Still in the specimen cup. Hopefully my C. adornatus pair will ignore him.

How long is the fish? It can do well with other members of fairies & flashers in most cases.

I hope to see your female(?) adornatus photos, too if you took.

Tanaka, it is approximately 3.75". Here is another shot in the cup.

Here is a lousy photo of the C. adornatus pair.

The flasher is already out & about. He lives amongst a T. rubrovittatus, male P. cerasinus, C. adornatus pair, M. kuiteri & some dartfish, chromis & a L. swalesi basslet.

Thanks for the photos and info of size. A nice, larger individual.

That's female adornatus ! In Japan we cannot get any female form of adornatus yet. It will be very exciting for me to see your female shots in a higher resolution. I will post you later.

I'm giving up on the flasher wrasses for now. I just can't seem to keep them alive. It must be my fairies. I don'y know if it's because my tank isn't very large or what?? They always end up being clean up crew food. It's a shame because I really like them. My rose scale & lubbocks are maybe just to agressive for them.

I have both flashers and fairy wrasses in both tanks. It has been my experience that flashers are initially more delicate but once one acquires healthy ones that they do well. But I do have larger tanks with lots of territories.

My First Flasher Wrasse

My First Flasher Wrasse

Here's a photo of my first flasher wrasse. I was told it was a McCoskers, is that true or is it another variety?
