Let's Count the Broken RIOs

0/6
never had any 'melt down', had to replace impellar on 1. They do have to be hit a couple times after being turned off, I don't mind thou(hope it never breaks my tank).

rio pumps, no never agian

rio pumps, no never agian

my only rio lasted 3weeks, it sucks
My maxi jet , no problems

Rio's 4/4 near electrocution twice. I now use them to kill rodents at work. I catch a rat on a glue trap them sit it in a tub of water then plug in a RIO :eek2:

I tell the rat what to expect ;)

Them WHAMMO...:blown:

Don't use RIO's unless you love sushi

Rio Story

Rio Story

OK sorry but it's story time, I'll try to make it quick.

Talking to LFS owner in front of a 75 filled with curing LR and a big-azz rio in the bottom. Talking, talkin, he leans up against the TANK (glass covered) and jumps about 2 feet in the air.

Looks down at tank, taps it, shocked again. "That's the weirdest thing, this tank is ZAPPING me!"

One look from me- "It's that damn Rio." He looks at me like I'm crazy, I convince him to unplug it. He taps the tank, no shock.

Rio in action right there!:eek1:

Wow, sounds like i was pretty lucky with my Rio experiences. They would just need to be smacked a few times after getting unplugged to start back up.

Crappy Rios.......

Many nice experiences with Rios. hehe.. I've had 2 down. One began giving me shocks. The other one exploded (melted) in water. I felt a strong burning smell and "thunders" in the tank comming from the powerhead. I'm glad I was passing buy the tank and could save my 112gal.

I've got Maxi-jets for more then 7 years working and still good. hagen are good too. :) No fails for these 2 pumps.

Grandis

Oh, I forgot those Quiet Ones. I have 2 down. Just stoped and that's it. Worked only couple of months. And the Ottos are the worse for shocks too.
Grandis.

(4) burned Rio's in less than 3 years.

Hagen (802) running for 5 years and Hagen (90?) running for 6 years.

Maxijets 1200 (2) runnning for 2 years now without any problems.

The last time I checked, I lost 5/7 Rios over the last 3 years...1-2500,2-2100,2-600. The 2100s and 2500 were for the needle wheel and the 600s used for feeding my Turboflotor. I lost the 2500 about 4 months after I purchased it. I know that disaster is probably around the corner, but I'm still in Rio denial.

I scared!! Rio 2100 feeding my temporary skimmer and 3100 for return. The 3100 has been running since February 2001. ZOIKS!! I better get that Mag 18 in here fast!!

2-2500 dead both lasted about 1.5 years
2 mj 1200 and 1 mj 900 running for 4 years and still going strong
1 mag 12 rumming for 6 months still going

1 failed 3100, also caused electrocution:eek:
1 small rio (the one that comes with CPR bak2) still ok
2 hagen 802 6yrs old, still run like champs

Rios-crap, only start when they want to, plus noisy
Penguin, same story
Hagen-no problems, but I only used them for about six months. They are my backups now. A little on the bulky side.
MJ-Tops in my book.

Wow,

I never new that Rio's were that prone to failing...What do you guys think about CAP powerheads? I bought a whole bunch off ebay once and have not had any problems in 6 Months...Can I expect a meltdown? I thought I heard once that they were made by the same company...Any truth to this?

Thanks in advance
-David-

2 Rio 2100 crapped out.

Maxijets, Mags, Iwaki, Sedra, Hagen, and Dolphin pumps and powerheads all being used, no problems with any of them.

1 failed Rio here.

Hey how big are the maxijets compared to the rio's? I have a 5 gal water jug I mix water in and the rio was the perfect size to drop in the bucket. My LFS doesn't carry much in the way of pumps so I will have to order it.

Thanks in advance.
