Let's Count the Broken RIOs

Maybe a dumb question but does anybody service their pumps? I've had MJs seize up on me all the time. I just had to pull them apart and take the steel rod out to scrape it clean. I add kalk and the Ca deposits get so thick on the rods that it can prevent them from spinning in the sleeve.

Wonder how many good pumps have been thrown away?

I've never owned a Rio and probably never will.

Can't remember any pumps going bad in 5 years. Have taken some out of service but nothing has gone bad.

vessxpress1 - I clean all brands of pumps. I've had smaller Rios refuse to restart, even after being cleaned repeatedly first. And I've had both the 2100 and 2500 burn up to the point of polluting water.

Recently I had a MaxiJet overheat and shut down. The magnet cracked in half, much to my surprise. I still have it but didn't post a picture.

Whne they started to seize up one by one, some were barely used and had no deposits whatsoever on them. Warranties, and replacements are fine if you have th etime to deal with it all. I just let them all seize up one by one, and pitched them. Literally dozens, of all sizes. I haven't had a Maxijet or Magdrive fail in over 3 years now.

Dont come in here defending RIO or I will burn you at the stake!!!!LOL....they are crap...you know it, I know it and the whole world knows it.

Rio's 3 of 3 went bad, two electricuting the tank

MJ's so far 0 of 9 all have been good, about 4 years now for some

Seio's 0 for 1 thing is new but runs well.

JME

I run them. No issues other than one not restarting after a flash power outtage. Had a Tunze do the same thing except it tried to beat itself to death when it locked.

So come on Serious, burn me at the stake :D "Fear the Reefer"

When my Rio locked up it didn't even get warm. I think those that melted down were older models that weren't UL listed.

From everything I've read, The older non-UL listed models were the problems, and TAAM may very well have gotten their act together.
Honestly, I couldn't care less if they now have the Vatican's seal of approval. They distributed a horrible, and in way too many cases, down-right dangerous product. They made them cheap, sold them cheap, and didn't give a darn about the consequences.
When you think about it, they taught me not to buy the cheapest product out there. A hard-learned lesson.

I used to use a Rio in my mixing vat. It never melted down but it did refuse to start a few times. I'm afraid to use it though because it makes my water smell funny.

I had two rios and one died peacefully and the other one cracked in half, died and released some crap into the water. Luckily it did not kill anything or electrocute me. Out of the 3 maxijets I've had only one die, after 6 or 7 years of service. No meltdown, it just would not start again. I have one on standby now, and one is a Maxijet Mod in my current tank.

I also have a Penguin 1140 that has been running for about 8 years. I will retire it soon when I get another Tunze.

I will never purchase a Rio(TAAM) ever again, regardless if they have "fixed" the problem or are UL listed.
