Let's Count the Broken RIOs

it should come as no suprise that you hear about them failing when they out sell other brands 10 or 20 to 1

I don't know for sure, you could be right, but those are some pretty amazing numbers.
Can you back that up?

count me in for 4 (or was it 5?) Now Ive just skipped the use of powerheads altogether and use big pumps in the sump running through a manifold-type arrangement. Less risk of being electrocuted again or having tar dumped in my reef.

The exact number? No way but who else moves the amount of pumps Rio does. Nearly every LFS I have ever walked into sells their stuff. Besides selling as stand alone pumps under three different names I've seen they come with a bunch of different low end skimmers and filters. I've got 3 or 4 of their little pumps laying around I've pulled off Aquafuges and a Fluidized Sand filter.

My first tank died (entirely) due to a RIO2100. I was working long hours and did not notice it increase the temp to a nice soupy 94 degrees. lets just say it wasn't pretty. everything bleached, all the inverts croaked... i was a tad bit upset.

Can we start another thread entitled: "Let's Count the Number of Times You've Been Shocked While a Rio was Plugged in Your Outlet" ?

I've used two in the past....never the freak again.

No doubt that RIO sells a ton of pumps, but Maxi Jets seem to be everywhere, and Hagen has a few power heads in service here and there.
I wasn't looking to put you on the spot, just wanted to see if the numbers you posted were actual, or guesses.

No biggie, I was just throwing out there that there are a ton of these things around. I've seen them sold as ViaAqua and something like Femji, they were obviously the same pump that was on my bakpak skimer.

I'm not trying to defend them. I would just like to know if the failures were fron their pre UL listed equipment. Their Hyprflow pumps are a great pump for Remora Skimmers and I'd really like to know if they are safe or not before I recomend them to people.

I've been using Rio 600RVT's and 800RVT's on several variations of Bakpak skimmers and never had one fail in the tank in about ten years.

However my protocol is probably a bit different than most people. I have two powerheads. One's in use while the other one is cleaned and kept as backup. Every couple of months the powerheads are swapped out and the used one is cleaned. After cleaning it's test run in freshwater. If it fails to restart after several on/off cycles, or if it makes noise while running, it discarded as having gone past it's useful life. Typical lifespan is about two years of actual use before I toss a Rio powerhead.

Ive used the 14hf, but not for a long period. Currently im using the 10hf on my remora pro. The pump hasn't failed me yet, but i feel the performance has dropped. Its about 1.5 to 2 years old.

Its a small and well priced pump, but you do get what you pay for. My advice is that if you can afford a better pump get it, if not the hyperflows are ok. Just.

I'm using a Rio 2500 UL as a return pump for a few years now and am using the Hyperflow 32 for the skimmer. I had one of the old school pumps come apart on me right where the cord went into the motor. The cords on the ones I have now are different.

My other Rio 2500 has been in my liverock cooking barrel for a couple of months. I could hear it running as the water makes noise. Until yesterday. It was too quiet, and you know what I mean by that. I pulled it out and it was still powered up, but not spinning. I got the impellar out, and it was super hot to the touch. And the pump felt oily. I cleaned it up in cool water and it did restart. I used to use it only to pump water for water changes, and it looks like its days are numbered.

A Mag pump is circulating the water in the LR now. And I need to do a water change for sure.

Several months ago I got a Rio 2100 and a 1000. I blocked the impellors in both and left them plugged in dry for over 30 hours. They only got slightly warm and once I unblocked the 2100 it started running fine. The 1000 had to sit for a few minutes before it would start again.
