Just got yesterday.

The derasas that I have seen photos of have a blue outside mantle margin followed by green and then gold in the interior. Squamosas are supposed to have broad scutes on the shell. I can't see these in your photo. I don't have a clam yet but I am looking at derasa.

Here are my two maxima. The large one is about 9 inches and the small one to the left is about 4. Sorry for the blurry second pic.

crustman, the picture was taken with a flash. it is darker without the flash. so if you see it without the flash, it is noticeably a squammy. so i agree with why you would think it is a derasa.

nice calm giambi...where'd you get it? (somewhere here in jersey?)

also - what's the red stuff behind the clam?

i actually bought this clam off of pacificeastaquaculture.com. they gave me a great deal on it. only 50 bucks. it is also only $15 for shipping since i am located in Jersey. i had to take it. and as for the red stuff, it was red slime algae but that was taken care of by adding a remover for it. the clam also has the red "stuff" on his shell but that is actually coraline algae. i tried to scrape if off thinking it was slime algae but it wouldnt come off. it looks pretty cool with it on the shell tho i think.

Look at the scoots on the shell; that's a good indicator of a squamosa, not the color pattern. If you could see the byssal opening, that would tell you as well. Nice squamosa Giambi! :)
