Produces 1 - 2 gal. of nog per day. Click on the red house and "skimmer" to see more pics and videos.

 I had the January meeting of the PSAS here last Sat. and most people just stared at it dumbfounded. Whatever...it cost so little make (and repair).

bdif: You could build one like mine for your system that would use 46 - 60W and it would remove small fish. :)

figure out how much space you have first. Check out Snailman's DIY for some basic skimmer principles. Click on my Red House and go to the skimmer page to see some pics. Decide how you will feed it with water, what kind of skimmer (ie: Airstone, beckett, or what) and start drawing it out. I had never worked with acrylic before I built mine, but I learned some lessons I can pass along to you.

Once you have a basic idea you can start gathering the materials and get in touch with me. I can coach you through the process.

It all depends on your comfort zone. Since I don't really have one, I will try just about anything!

IMO, building a skimmer like this is fairly easy. I did it with ordinary shop tools and easy to get materials:

-- router
-- table saw
-- clamps
-- tap set
-- SS Thumb screws
-- oven
-- oiled 5 lb, barbell wieght
-- spray bottle of water
-- acrylic tube
-- acrylic sheet
-- acrylic square rod
-- EDPM weather stripping gasket material
-- Weld-On 4, 16, 40
-- glue applicator
-- Gate valves, PVC pipe, fittings, & bulkheads
-- Air hose & hose clamp
-- Air pump
-- Air stones

Using a jointer would make the connections much better, but I don't have one.

A very good friend , built my skimmer . It's a hexagon tube , which he made using a heat tape to make the bends . There is only one glue joint , the length of the tube. The tube is 14" in diameter X 48" tall . The skimmer uses three Sedra 9000 needle wheel pumps . Ted

That was one of the ones I studied before building mine. :)
