Lets see your breeding setup

I am looking for ideas for a breeding room. Looking to breed clowns for now. Any ideas for equipment setup is greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the mis spelling in the title.

I don't have a breeding room but I do have a breeding tank that is working out really good on the small scale.

I have a 40b on with a 20 long sump. The 40b has 4 dividers giving it 5 equally divided spaces. The 20 long is divided in 3 sections. the first section has a drip tray with a spung filter and under that its filled with tufa rock (maybe 40 lbs) for bio filtration. The second section is just big enough for a protein skimmer, and finally the third compartment is for the return pump (I would advise making this section as big as possible so that you do not have to put water in every day, if its small it will go down really fast).

The 40b is plumbed to the 20 long using the glass holes over flow box.

When I set this tank up I was told you will never have the volume needed to keep the water perams high, and the fish happy. I was also told chances of getting them to breed would be vary slim. Well as of today I can prove them all wrong. I have three breeding pairs of clowns and I had a breeding pair of cardinals (they are in my display tank now). I feed these guys every time I think about them (sometimes 0 sometimes 5 times a day). I use a turkey baster about once every 3 or 4 weeks to clean the bottom. Doing that normally requires about 1 gallon of water. I also remove about 1 gallon of water every time I remove a clay pot. So total I may pull out about 1.5 gallons a week for water changes.

So as you can tell its not a big set up and its not too expensive. I am also not what you would call the most dedicated person to the aquarium. I pretty much leave it alone and the fish do their thing.

I'm not sure who was telling you that 60 gallons of total water volume would be unstable and a challenge but they gave you some bad advice. I know plenty of breeders who make due with 10-24 gallon individual broodstock tanks. 60 is a luxury.

I also started with a divided 40 that housed 3 pairs and a 20 gallon sump. Perfectly stable system although waterflow was an issue when it came to properly incubating the eggs.

Got any pics of your setup?

this is mine, has changed a little since then but overall you get the idea.

Wow lots of Return Flow! Why 2 pumps ?

I tried quite a few different combinations with pumps, 1 panworld 200 was just not enough flow, the reeflo tiger shark was really loud and way too much pressure, the dart hybrid was less then the panworld at that pressure. So it is a little bit too much flow but i have a ball valve on each tank which lets me balance it out.
One pump runs each side top and bottom. I didn't want to have to run powerheads for flow in the tanks.

Any shots on how you made the rack? I am trying to do the same type of rack and I am looking for construction hints.

Thanks

Justin

I started with a few tanks I got from a local supplier

bought a few fittings

made a few manifolds, one for supply one for return. So I can isolate each tank separately

and finished before I hung any lights over it

I just broke down and purchased two of the MARS system from a defunct big box store. They are complete 4 foot wide by 8 foot tall system each, so I will use both of these for my setup versus building racks for my 6 40B tanks.
