Lets See Your Frag Tanks

How many of you guys have Frag Tanks. Thinking of setting up a 20 Long after i move. I dont think that should cost too much extra. Any comments welcome. As of right now it will be a 20 BB, Unsure of lights, i might use 130w power compacts i have on my current tank and upgrade those to T5's or Metal Halides.

My frag tank is a 40g stock tank with a 250 MH over it and is hooked to my main system. It receives water from the overflows of the main displays and overflows itself into the refugium so it is very efficient. However, it was too much bother to monitor and keep clean and now just sits empty.

Ken is definetely the one to talk to on this topic. His frag tank has more corals than his display tank. :D

Thanks for the kind words. You guys gotta see my new 120 frag tank (8'x2'x1'). LOTS of surface area to work with. I'll try to post a couple pics later.

vmiller, was it really a lot of upkeep? what where you fragging? I would imagine if you were doing mostly SPS it would be a PITA, but i plan on doing mostly soft corals (Zoos, Rics, Shrooms, Leathers).

I had a crazy idea, i dont know how it will work, but let me know what you think. I would like to set up my prop tank much like a nano, and maybe build a false wall taking up maybe 10% of the tank, and build 2 chambers, water overflows into a chamber of LR Rubble, then into a fuge with a DSB, then back into the barebottom tank. The lighting would cover the whole tank so there is no need for additional lighting in the fuge.

Ok, here's a couple pics of my new prop tank setup. I have around 700gph flowing from one end of the tank to the other. Plus there is another 700gph flowing through a closed loop and exiting through 3 SCWDs. I only have a single 4' lighting fixture for now. The tank is going to have to pay for the other one! Enjoy and let me know what you think.

Ken, thats awesome, i was thinking of maybe doing a rubbermade tank also. What are you propping? do you sell it locally, online? how long has the system been up for? are those compact florecents, MH, T5?

i am not looking to make any money off my system, maybe just fund the hobby.

Right now I'm trying to get my stock up on all kinds of softies. I have some SPS that I'm growing out to size then selling off. The system has only been up for about a month now. But I pulled all the stock from my 29g prop that was up for over a year. The lighting is 4x54w T5s.

Absoulutey SWEET!
Ok...now we need a close-up of the frags down in there! :D

Tony if you ask nicely he might just show you in person. lol

Ken did an excellent job. Pretty meticulous plumbing! Looks very clean. Job well done. ;)

Yes, SPS. What made it a pain in the *** was that microalgae was growing in it and I wasn't motivated enough to deal with it properly. I wouldn't call it a lot of upkeep, but it seemed like too much on top of the maintenance needed for everything else.

Very Nice Gary, i like that a lot.

Gary & Ken, Do you prop to make money, to fund the hobby, or just for fun? If so, do you sell your frags?

I like the fact of the rubbermades like Ken is using because of less upkeep to make it look good, but i like what Gary's got going on, and i was thinking of breeding B. Cardianls also, so i think my prop tank will serve multiple purposes, i think i will do a 30 or 40 now.
