Lets see your large tank rubbermaid sump setup

I'm thinking a 100 gal rubbermaid stock tank (or maybe 150) is the way to go for the sump for a 185 or 225 (5 ft tank) I'm planning. I've seen a number of TOTM using them. If you have one, please post pics of your setup and details. Can you incorporate a fuge? Remote DSB? Internal or external skimmer? did you find the sump was easy to use? Thanks in advance.

Can you tell us some details? A couple questions that come to my mind:
1) how do you keep the water level constant for the skimmer?
2) how did you drill the bulkheads?
3) where did you find the container you are using for the fuge?

There are stand pipes in the sump with the skimmer so the water level stays the same and if the power goes out it doesnt drain to much water in to the next sump.

its a plastic pallet bin I found it on ebay
 
My display tank is just a 120 but I wanted to jump at the chance to post in the big boy forum :)

I use a 100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank for my sump and also have a 40 breeder plumbed in as a refugium.

Can you give some more details on how you have your flow set up? It looks like into the sump, then the skimmer, then direct feed to the fuge?
 
is there any micro bubble travel up to your show tank when you do like that?/ is there a filter shock or something in the drain down,,??and also i see that you are T off the return line,,,why you do that for??
 
I direct feed my skimmer from my tank's overflow box(in the right of the photo). The excess goes into a bubble trap (large verticle PVC pipes) in my sump. No (or very few) micro bubbles return to the main tank.

I also have the return feed in the sump extended to the end opposite the bubble traps. This helps to ensure no bubbles get transferred.

As for the t's off my return line; 1 feeds the refuge which is then gravity fed back into the sump, 1 feeds my CA Reactor and another feeds my chiller.
 
can you tell me about pvc bubble trap?? what do you put in there??spong??/ and also ,,look like you don't need a auto top off system/?/ all you have is the float valve ??is that work well??
do you ever worry about dumpingall that 30g fesh water into theshow tank??
 
This is what the bubble trap looks like out of the water. There is an opening at the bottom of each which allows the water to escape into the sump. Most of the bubbles rise to the top and disperse instead of exiting these openings. Some bubbles do escape but they dissipate before getting to the opposite end of the sump where the return pump feeds.

I want to note that these bubble traps were not my design. I borrowed the idea from Stan Zemanek from this thread. There are also more pics of stock tank setups in this thread.

I don't need a top off system but it sure makes life easier. I just fill the can every few days and the level remains constant in the tank. The float valve has never failed. I guess there is a slight chance that it could but I check my tank several times a day and would notice. Even if it did dump a full can of freshwater into the tank, I don't think it would be fatal to the inhabitants.
 
I use a 150g Rubbermaid as a sump. It contains the overflows from my 85g(main floor) cube and 210g(basement). Once the water passes through the ASM G6, it either goes to the return pump for the cube or overflows into the return pump sump(90g) for the 210g.
